Old bbq planters

I can't locate my before pic of this old smoker bbq, but this orange one is similar to the one I found on the curb on 'trick or trash' day, lol. These old bbqs keep their color, so don't need painted, just taken apart and cleaned.

The bbq is now 3 planters. The one in the corner is the tub, the lid is on the ground and the cap is on top of the soil in the lid.

Another shot. The green baskets are golf ball buckets with fake grass lining. The cage barrel on the left is a wine rack.

Particle board is sawdust with some kind of resin, pressed hard into a board. When it gets wet, it swells and the particles become detached from each other. That causes it to disintegrate, unfortunately. If you sprayed every surface with a coating of polyurethane, that might seal it enough to get some use out of it as a planter. I don't think you could get an impermeable seal with wrap or a tarp.

Hi Collectorplant and CrazyCase Thanks, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I was on vacation at the seashore and did not want to return home. I had purchased a cement casting of the face a few years ago. I made a silicone mold out of the cement face and poured a plaster of Paris base to support it. I have recast the silicone mold several times with a straight cement mixture. I tried to use a hypertufa mixture to make the face but could not get good detail on eyes and nose so I just went with straight cement mixture. There are several helpful sites on this forum that explain how to create a silicone mold. I went onto the Web to find out how to create a POP support base. Let me know if you have anymore questions and I'll be happy to provide you with links. :-)

That is not what I was expecting to see. It doesnt even look like a redo, it looks like you went out and bought it. Very nice and professional looking. I see these often at the curb but had no idea what anyone could do with them. I should have had more faith in the creativity of the group. I really like it a lot.

For the metal tower, I would first try advertising what you have and someone will probably be willing to cut it out for you if they can keep the metal. If not, yet, you will need a cutting torch. I'm not sure if you can rent one or not - try Home Depot. The copper may be worth something - copper prices are pretty high right now. You can call a scrap metal place and find out. You could also call places that supply metal roofing material. They may be able to steer you in the right direction.

I'll just say that you really scored BIG time with that OLD BBQ! I was looking at the egg grills at a BBQ place just down the street. They are in the range of $800! Besides that they are VERY heavy. It is made out of some ceramic! You did really well seperating them and planting them up with the succulants! Thank for letting us see them.

Thanks for the nice comments. These old bbqs make great pots. The largest red pot in this photo is the same bbq bottom. I passed up a $15 yellow one a few years back because I didn't feel like hauling it to my car. DUH!!

Jeanne, this is in the front yard at the end of the house. I recently picked up over 800 keystone pavers at a yard sale for $100. We moved all the crap, oops, meant wonderful finds out of that corner and put some down on sand. The gate was removed from the other end of the house to get the pool removed. It's just standing there looking pretty.

The wood fence isn't moving fast enough. I finally figured out that if we sand, paint and install the 2x4s onto the chain link, there would actually be a place to hang them when done, instead of moving them from here to there, and back again, lol. A lot of them are ready to hang, some are primed and ready for paint. And I thought that it would be finished in a few months. On it goes!!! Linda

that is super Linda. Plants are doing well I see. Glad you are getting a lot done....not me...but school will start this week and DD will be home in Oct so I will get a short relief. Then I am headed to my moms. She is getting sick and getting dementia and I am the only one with a DH. So off I go. Not that I mind my TX but will be hard work and not any breaks for a while.
