Using old bookshelf as raised planter

carola_gw(Z3NH)

Thinking of using an old bookcase as a raised bed. It's about 6ft high and will be about 11.5 inches deep about 3.5 feet wide across.Thinking of taking out some of the shelves to partition larger planting areas. Is this deep enough to plant most any vegetable? There is a thin back to it which would be the bottom-looks like it could easily be removed. These are inexpensive but fairly sturdy cases bought years ago but don't think they are wood maybe a composite with some heavy laminate on top?Probably got them a Wally world. They have been in an unheated garage and don"t look warped. My son thinks they will just fall apart but I would be happy to just get this year out of them since I was going to trash them anyhow.
