No Bed is Safe Around Me!!

Shortly after completing my first bunk bed bech, I found someone offering two more head/foot boards for free. They were all the same size so they weren't ideal for making another bench (plus I still had the remaining pair from the first bunk bed curb shopping spree).

They did however, compliment my garden shed nicely as a fence! Follow the link to see how they turned out. (garden in front and brick pathway not done yet.)

I just checked for new posts and read yours. I have to tell you how beautiful your shed looks, and the bunk bed boards just adds to it. I would never have thought to use them as decorative fencing..Being new to the world of "Garden Junk", can I ask you .. Do you just paint the wood and use it like that, or do you have to put some kind of waterproof finish on it? People on here are soooo creative..hopefully I can get the "hang" of it, and make some "art" for our gardens..

Not a clue what its treated with. Though the newer tratements are supposedly safer in a given quantity, there is less info on how fast they leach their chemicals out or how readily they are taken up by food crops, so they could be even worse for us. However, in that setting, I'd look for roof flashing the right size to go up against the wood instead of plastic, and you could probably push that in even after the bed has been planted

An older stove can be burned efficiently if it is handled properly. Mostly this means never closing off the air supply, but instead carefully regulating the amount of wood you put in and adjusting the airflow for optimum burning. If you are not going to choke off the air then you must be careful to never load the stove up with too much wood. You must make a few smaller, hotter fires per day. You must never load it up with wood for the night hoping to make the fire last till morning. This is like leaving your car running in the garage overnight so it will still be running in the morning. When you choke off the air to one of the modern stoves you are just shutting down the primary air supply to the pile of firewood. This creates thick clouds of smoke otherwise known as "fuel". The stove is still letting in secondary air to the catalytic converter or secondary combustion chamber where this gaseous fuel, which will be produced as long as the wood is hot, is burned. If you are judicious with the wood, adjust the air to match, and keep the stove burning hot, then there is not much for the cat or secondary combustion to do. If you shove too much wood in, choke off the air, or both, then the secondary combustion is a big deal. Without it the smoke will continue up the flue pipe. While the stove and flue are still hot this smoke will go out and pollute the atmosphere. As the flue cools the smoke will begin to condense inside on the walls of the flue pipe. This is creosote and it has burned down many houses. When the next hot fire is made, the creosote in the flue, which is distilled, unburned fuel, may catch fire. If it is just a thin coating you may never know and it does little harm. If there is a thick accumulation the ensuing chimney fire can be extremely intense, melting metal flues and cracking masonry. Flames shoot out the top of the chimney. On top of everything else there is pyrolysis, which is a chemical reaction that takes place in wood after prolonged exposure to heat. Normally it takes several hundred degrees F to get wood to burst into flame, but years of exposure to say 200 degrees can work a chemical change such that someday it might catch fire at not much more than 200 F. This is why it is such a big deal to keep the proper clearance from combustibles. The wood 2x4s in the wall may not give any signs, such as smoking, for years, then may suddenly progress rapidly to the open flame stage. The wooden handles on your barbecue tongs probably take higher heat for short periods, while you are actively holding them, but the combustibles in your walls or furniture can cook for years without coming to your attention. It is difficult to operate a stove with sufficient attention to detail that you always burn cleanly. The new designs have made it much easier. One last thing you could do is stack up rocks or concrete blocks around the stove to create even more of a heat sink but that would look like what it is, an afterthought. People have done it though and it allows you to let the fire rip for a while, then die out for a while. Efficiency-wise and pollution-wise it gives better results than keeping a fire burning continuously at a semi-throttled condition. Others will point out that the new stoves do a pretty good job anyway but that is the underlying theory.

Yes, safe. The horror stories about heavy metals in inks are way outdated. Printers have a big surcharge for press cleanup and trash disposal if the customer insists on the inks. And biodegradable adhesives to hold the plies together is the norm, not the exception. The only boxes to avoid are the moisture-resistant ones that beer and some produce is packed in. Any of the single-ply cardboard boxes, like the Amazon shipping boxes, are fine.

@texasranger2, The place where the mosquitoes are the worst there none of that is present for the parts that we control but it borders three to four other properties that we have no control over. The biggest problem was that the mosquitoes were attacking the indoor dogs, one in particular, when they were outside. We started doing things to treat/repel the mosquitoes from the dog and this is going to be an additional measure. It did cross my mind about only being able to control our side of the fence/property but I hoped the plants would serve as a barrier/deterrent, which may be reasonable but one of the properties does have a lot of overgrowth and the odds are fairly high that there is standing water off our property but near where the dogs roam, so as I write this it is becoming clearer that the parts I have no control over are more of an issue than I initially thought. @ken_adrian, Interesting point about them knowing what to avoid because I have foxglove seeds and was very disappointed when I read that they are toxic. I have a few large/tall containers and am considering adding the foxglove as a companion plant but I am still looking into if and how much that will mitigate the risk. @mattp321, I will look into those two plants. @floral_uk , They are car tires. They are now covered in leaves so you really can't see what's in them. If necessary I will remove excess catnip, mint, and oregano to make space. You may be right that I will have to make the repellent. When I read about the repellent properties of catnip, I read that it was better than citronella and assumed that all that was needed was the plant but I don't know now, maybe even with citronella you have to actually use parts of the plant to make repellent.

Gosh, that made an absolutely wonderful decorative fence around your shed. And another photo for our Album too.
I absolutely have zero imagination, good thing I have everyone here to help me along. LOL. But I haven't even found the stuff to make a bench yet. Someday I hope.

Sapphire, if I can do stuff anyone can. Just jump in and make something. I started with a totem, tho those things are like potato chips, LOL.

Gee Karen, you make it sound so easy and exciting...I just don't know where to start..I have so much "nice junk" lying around in the sheds, but I'm still looking at everyones posts and links for ideas that I may be able to make something. I am so not creative...I am going to try something daring..,lol. Hubby has a fishing pole rack that he can't use, so I had some leftover lattice, and thought I could make a backing for it, paint it the same color, put a coat of polyurethene (sp) and hang it on our wall out back near our patio table. Since it has a shelf, I could put some small flower pots in it. We were going to hang it later in the day, but we had storms,..Hopefully I can get it up tomorrow, take a picture and show you all...I'm dying to make a bench out of our grandsons crib, but not sure if it can be done...Think I'll take baby steps first..lol..de

That is a great idea for those beds! I don't know if I would have thought that far out of the box, but I'm glad I looked in your box! LOL I'm gonna have to keep that in mind for whenever I get doing my garden shed!

Another great idea. I just love the way it compliments and finishes your garden shed. I have a shed out back and I'll have to take another look to see if something like this could be added. I have a very old piece of a wooden headboard that I've been wanting to make into a bench. It's from an old victorian type of bed. I also have an old child/tot iron headboard and footboard that I've been saving to make into a flower bed. YEAH FOR OLD BEDS!

Sapphiregirl, your plans for a garden shelf sound really creative to me! I can't wait to see what you do! I bet you surprise yourself at what all you will make in the future! thank you for all the wonderful comments. It's always nice to hear from people who don't think I'm crazy! (my neighbors never know what to expect from me when I haul home the junk I find- but no complaints with finished projects yet!)

the shed houses the supplies for my future projects- old doors and windows, apple crates. milk jugs, broken chairs- so much potential!!!

yes, the "porch" on the back of the shed is made up of 2 4X5 wooden skids or pallets side by side (with new wood slats to connect them)

WEATHERPROOFING: to paint the head/foot boards (because they were a 1970s brown) I used Zins cover-all primer. (I think that's the name of it.) They sell stuff like it in any hardware store. It is designed to cover up all stains and faults before a paint job. It's pretty thick and I don't even paint white over top of it. What you see there is just the primer (and only 1 coat, too!)

The feet of the boards, what are now the fence posts, don't actually touch the soil of the garden. The one side is attached directly to the shed and the corner and end posts are suspended up by putting rebar into the bottoms. We took out the pegs that normally would hold the two beds together if they were stacked and my husband drilled those holes down a little further so the bar would go up into the post more and give more support. The rebar was pounded very far into the ground and then the posts slid over top of it. It's VERY windy here where we are and he didn't want them blowing over or splitting. I then put large gravels stones under and around the posts to keep any water from collecting at the base and rotting it out. It looks nice as a finishing garden touch with the stones there, too.
