My blue concords survived the winter, and have begun to leaf out again. This is their second year. Can I expect them to fruit? I see some "activity" on the vines that appear to be immature grapes, but something tells me I saw the same thing last year. What is the normal fruiting time? Zone 5b

So. charm is perennial and pretty hardy here in zone 6. WSown last year, here's a photo taken early spring this year- the plant having survived it 1st winter. I don't know about the verbena and coral salvia. They're annuals here, not cold hardy. I did grow the coral salvia last year but it croaked when bitten by frost in fall. Like Carrie said, some protection might be necessary. I think a blanket or tarp would do. Can't you just steal a blanket from somebody's bed? Karen

Hot to the touch? Ancient piece of junk SxS? Like maybe from the early 80s or older? Sounds like the electric heater is stuck on. My admittedly vague recollection of SxS fridges from that era is that some of them had a swtich for the auto-defrost cycle and sometimes they had a switch or button for a moisture/condensation control. If you have one of those and can turn of the switch, do so. That may take care of the hot door frames. May take a couple of hours for the fridge to settle back down. If you have a not-quite-so-old fridge, you might want to try to vaccuum the condensor coils and condensor cooling fan (in the rear of the fridge, usually behind a metal or fiberboard panel that is held on with screws.) . Also, check to see if the condensor cooling fan is running. Turning the settings all the way down got it to stop running for 20 minutes? What happens if you turn the dials/sliders up towards off? If you've had it all the way down and move the controls back up, it should stop running several stops before off. None of the above helps? I'm with GreedDesigns, then. I've observed Liriodendron for decades, it's probably my favorite tree. I'd ask the same questions that Tom has, and add this: the tree looks to be under great stress, it has been pruned to remove dead wood or maybe to 'balance' the loss of roots with the top, there are more dead branches in the top of the crown, and the foliage looks undersized. I've seen forest trees exhibit these same symptoms when the area they are growing in is heavily logged or severe weather removes many cohorts. A WAG (and I hope I'm wrong), the tree will continue to decline and become stag headed. There will be many epicormic shoots from the main limbs and trunk. It will never again regain it's former glory. It will probably live on for years, maybe decades, unless removed. Unless MASSIVE amounts of the root system were removed and the tree is structurally unstable, it won't fall. Large upper crown limbs that die may, however. Old poplars (and many other old trees) do not like to be messed with.
