Kirk's succulant dish garden inspiration

OK, so I'm blaming Kirk for this! :-) As you have seen Kirk was my SJJ Gardyloo dude. (Anyone who didn't participate in the Secret Junk Jamboree NEEDS to get on the bandwagon for next year!) He gave me two enamelware bowls that I want to use to make succulant gardens out of )per his suggestion and being inspired by a couple of y'all). So, I haven't decided if I want to drill holes in the bottom of these. In the meantime I found a wonderful collander at the TS and had a yellow enamelware one that my MIL had given me. I took those two an put together succulant dish gardens. Here is a link to them. What do you think?

Jules ~ those are fantastic! The lizard?/reptile adds just the right touch! I just love dish gardens like that! You really lucked out receiving such a good gift from Kirk/a.k.a. GardylooDude LOL. Maybe he won't mind taking the blame :-)

I use ge ii on the glass (tho I've heard lexel works too and dries clearer, I've not tested it personally.) For attaching the spoons I use AUTOMOTIVE goop, following the instructions. Except rather than applying it to both surfaces, I just apply a lot to the spoon, then I press it in place where I want it on the back of the plate. THEN I immediately pull the spoon away, leaving some goop on the plate. Cure separately for up to 10 min and press back together. This is much easier than putting it on both. btw, plumbers goop doesn't hold through the weather. I was not well one day last week and it was the day I should have done the spoons in order to let them cure for 2 days before selling. Then we had unexpected company anyway on Saturday. I still regret not making it to the fair as I think it would have been a good venue. But now my goal is to make 40 more if I can and sell them this fall. Kathy

Hi Sandib! Do a search here for dish flowers and you should be able to find all kinds of methods. I use two methods myself depending on the plate material. You can drill the plates with a diamond drillbit and attach them together with a bolt and nut and attach it through the pipe you're putting the flower on or you can glue the flowers together with GE Silicone II and attach a "hanger" to the back. Some people use "L" plumbing fittings on the back and slide that down over the pipe "stem" or I glue a coat hanger bent a piece of coat hanger into the shape of a hook and placed it in the pipe stem. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more directions.

Here is the dish on top of a metal table stand I found at a yard sale for a couple bucks. I thought I would be able to get the bolts out of the dish to have drainage, but they won't come out. So I'll need someone to drill some holes for me, then I'll cover them with window screen, add some cactus soil, then plant with hens 'n chicks and other sedums. I will update with new pics once it's planted.

Those are really, really, really nice!!! Love how you've put them together.

Something else for me to find at a thrift store or YS! I also have an enamel basin I am reluctant to put holes in but have seen colanders, just didn't realize they could be used this way.

LuckyGal, the succulents love all that extra drainage in the colanders. Lining with burlap, landscape fabric or coconut liner will help keep the dirt/sand in, and you won't be able to really see it. ~tenderlee

Thank you all for your very wonderful comments! Ok, so both dish gardens have a toad and frog. I have been trying to find little gnomes/creatures to put in there. Now that I'm looking I cannot find them....of course....

Now, just so you know I put in there cactus/palm soil. I did not line it but I'm almost certain that I will not lose soil from it. I just water it ever so lightly. they are outside so I don't worry about how it drains. I guess the holes would determene if you need to line it or not...

Glad to keep "enable-ing" y'all! :-) It's Kirks fault!

desertrat...I posted to your pics on other side...you already know I LUV this! And I am coveting the yellow enamel drainer! So cute! I had to buy a couple 50% small plants today to create one of these with my succulents I already have here at home. Will post later (when I get it done)...I'm going to try enamel pan & put a false bottom in...as don't want to drill holes in this one! TFS these pics on this side, too! Jeanne S. They turned out just great! LOVE the yellow colander... I've never seen one that color before! And, yes...that Kirk...he can really be blamed for a lot of our creativity!

I wish I had sun on my balcony! I'd love to have a succulent dish garden. Love both colanders and your little frog and toad. You did a great job placing the plants and the rocks. Thanks for sharing and thanks to Kirk for inspiring!

What a hot idea - you are just sizzlin' with inspiration! I have a white enamel colander w/red trim...and a new calling, lol. Not nearly as cheery as yours but it'll do the trick. It has a lil patch of strawberries painted on the side :: but I'm thinkin I can turn it so they won't show (?)

Haha, guess what g-son & I will be doing next weekend? =] Plus, you just gave me an idea for another [obsolete] kitchen piece I have...hope it works!

I want some! Succulents hate me, I probably drown them is my guess. But I love your little pots of them. I wonder if I dare try again?

Usually you can find tiny gnomes at Walgreens. Also Walmart has them, and fairies, in that white resin...they are plant stakes, but I just take my jigsaw and cut off the stake and they sit perfectly fine then. Plus I paint them.

Jules, they look great. I say go for it - poke the holes in your pans, plant them up and enjoy them! I just use a hammer and nail. Here's a few of mine when I first planted them - they are really filled out now.

I get my gnomes at Jo-Ann Fabrics. The best size are plant pokes. I just take my nippers and cut them down so they just have a small stake on the bottom - stabilizes them a little better in the pans. The best part is they are 70% off right now. I'll have to look at WalMart again, Karen, I've never seen fairies there.

Thank you thank you! BUT, really I curtsey, and then turn and curtsey to Kirk! Heheeheee---he and Luvs are the inspiration--oh, and also some business property owner in Cambria, Ca. whose planters are truly amazing!!!!!
I will have to hole up those bowls I have and get my GM(gluteous maximus) over to Walgreens and Joanns again. You know y'all are just feeding the disease.
