Turns out, my screen room wasn't quite done.. maybe now... lol

Over the top? My sister brought with her a bunch of curtains and we hung them all the way around. Makes it very romantic and girly...lol She enjoyed her visit and her and my BIL slept in the screen room, and loved it. The peaceful chirping birds, katydibs, frog croaks..

I promise to quit posting about this room...lol

This is even lovelier with the sheers against those windows. Never, never stop posting about your room. It's an inspiration to us all. Everytime I see it, there is always something I didn't see before. I'm being inspired to create the "atmosphere" your room has around my hot tub.

Dear Sighing Carl, You actually sound quite normal and gardener-sane considering the present circumstance. Many of us here felt the same way last Oct. 30 when 14" of wet snow brought down everything it could and destroyed years of growth and thousands of dollars. Last year's event for me and your current status, as unpleasant as they were/are, brought me to a new level of gardening thinking. I try to make gardens look like more with less material not just because of $, but the aging bod can't do what it once did. Also, I've had to adjust my expectations of plant/tree/shrub heights. Last year's storm toppled 15' rhodies so that I had to lasso them and use the riding mower to bring them upright again, rebury the root system, only to eventually have to cut their height in half to prevent toppling again. The changing climate and its odd timing of storms forces me to rethink what I plant. Full Southwestern-like xeriscaping isn't quite my thing, but Mediterranean style with shorter growing plants works for me. Once one has lived through a night of 90' tall oak and maple trees cracking and their tonnage crashing to the ground making your house shake, well, shorter ornamental trees are now quite appealing to me. If you want them, Carl, I have a couple of lovely little Jap maples here with your name on them. Oh, and as for the sighing or 'deep breathing', I'm a 7th generation Connecticut Yankee who can make fire with two sticks, have had to pee in the woods and live for weeks without electricity; but these recent storms damn near made me pass out, so you can bet your asters I'm changing with the climate change. Hey court, Listen to steve. Here is an example regarding "won't starve". I put 20 adult composting worms into a 2 gallon bucket of damp gravel / soil (NO FOOD), covered the bucket (virtually air tight) and left them alone for 3 months. I did check moisture every 2 weeks. It was a little damp, so I added about 1 sq. foot of cardboard ripped up into pieces, and left for a total of 4 months. Guess what I had at the end on 4 months? Of the 20 adults, 12 were still alive (and seemed healthy). Cocoons were too many to count (literally hundreds). Young hatchlings were also plentiful. No food was added to the bucket at any time (I guess you can count 1 sq. ft of cardboard as food). Moral of the story: You can't under feed worms, believe me I have tried. As Steve said, take it easy to start. Cheers PS - I replicated an experiment done at "the burrow" with the bucket and all. Google "the burrow worms" and have a read. Interesting stuff. :-)

This thread is inspiring! I am dying to just clear out crap (or not so crappy stuff which I still feel is weighing me down.) We're going to try to sell our house next year and move back to the city, so we will need to get rid of a lot of stuff. Books... no one brought up the issue of bringing them to a library, so I thought I would broach that topic. As a librarian, I have to advise against this! I cannot tell you the CRAP people bring us. Most people are well-meaning, imagining that we can use as many books as we can get. A fair amount of people, though, bring thing to us which are obviously junk, leaving boxes outside the building when we're closed, rather than making the effort to go through things and then bring the junky stuff to the dump. Even the well-meaning people almost invariably end up making more work for us. Even in small libraries with limited budgets, space is usually an issue. And, librarians would rather be able to use the precious space for new items they've selected themselves, in keeping with their Collection Development policies. At best, we can store the donated books and try to sell them in a book sale. Usually, though, the donations make more work for us and the return on the "investment" (of effort) is not high. Most librarians want to create and maintain goodwill in their communities, so they will rarely turn away anything but the worst donated items, but in every library in which I have ever worked, they turn around and gripe to their colleagues. So please... use other avenues (like Got Books? in the northeast) to get rid of your books. Burning books... it sounds horrible, so Fahrenheit 451. But really, very, very few books are precious. There are so many copies of most books, and so many books become obsolete quickly. Others simply aren't in good shape. Don't feel bad about burning your books. Sure, if you have some books which are not on topics which can become outdated, and they're in wonderful shape, consider donating them to a charity which specifically requests book donations. But otherwise... you are not harming anyone or anything by burning books.

We're being "stormed-out" here again!!! That's what makes me ask...when I see all your beautiful glass & everything!More tree branches down here overnight...but missed house & bldgs! Thankful! No as bad as last one that took 2 big trees!

I love it so and we see LOTS and Lots of screen rooms down here.What a great way to repurpose everything. I just need to know how you keep the pretty glassware from toppling over or do you not get much wind?
You know,there are alot of smokers out there who could benefit from a room like that. My neighbor lady(86) has to stand in her driveway to smoke because her kids and grandkids moved in.I don't blame them but.......it is HER home!

No, we don't get much wind, the trees around us cuts most down to a wimper, and there's a lip on the shelf that most of the glassware is on. Most of the glassware is totem making, cheap stuff. Yes, this is very nice for smokers, (my sister does) she just sat by a "window" and enjoyed the fresh air.
We put one of those blow up beds in there, and was very comfy. I am looking for a futon or daybed kinda thing for the far wall so I can relax, nap, read. We are out there all day and evening.
Rain comes from the west, mostly and we have gutters on the low sides, so just an occasional blow in drop or three. We do intend cementing the floor (I have visions of stained or painted concrete underfoot) eventually.

Akup, I do have a hot tub, and thought about putting it in but thought it might be too crowded. The hot tub will go in the greenhouse to warm it in winter, when I get it built.
We are parked under two huge trees, one hickory and a black walnut. Wow when those fall on the roof, you'd think someone just shot a gun or something! Loud on the tin roof, the only time it really bothers is in the fall when its constant... LOL
A secret to the glassware is Gorillia double stick tape. Works very well. Line the shelves, and put down the glassware.. presto, just expect to tug to remove it.

thank you calamity_j, I've used 5 rolls building this room..lol It also holds the screen on until you screw the wood strips, and the wood strips until you can screw that too.. couldn't have done it alone without it. It's 10.00 a roll, worth every penny.
It does not come off, but will get less sticky over time. It's for carpets, but I've used it everywhere...lol Pieces of it stableizes my little paper weights too. I just cut a piece that fits the bottom. then its hard to knock them off. It will wash off glass eventually.

I'll never get tired of pics of this special room in the woods! Any nature lover would love to spend time there. It's right out there in it, yet has all the comforts.

DD, I said ALL the comforts, I don't think you forgot one thing! LOL Thanks for sharing your fantastic space, and the great tips like the Gorilla tape, I never would have guessed that the glass had any help with stability. ~tenderlee

Have you ever seen a cement floor with mosaic pieces in it? You could do it bit by bit,I just love them. It is not totally covered but has things like coins,skeleton keys,a horsehoe , chipps of dishes and such.A chinese restauraunt in town did it.
