My country bumpkin yard pics

This is my country back yard, in honor of DH who lives in someplace with a population of more than 8,000 for the first time in his life. It seems to help him feel at home. Porch still needs painted and things -- always an ongoing project of course. What do you think?

Love it! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who wants to put a deck on the shed - I love the "sittin' spot" and the winding path!

Juliann, I'll post a site from the UK that has pictures of various types of gardens. This link goes to their Cottage Garden which they say is "contrived to look uncontrived". There are many other types of gardens there that might provide inspiration. Which plants you choose depends on which climate zone you are in. I'm in zone 3 so am somewhat limited in what I can grow. I'll post a pic of what I call my wild bird garden. It's an area in my large garden that has the birdfeeder and birdbath. I allow the flowers to go to seed for the birds so they self-seed. This area has changed over many years altho I initially seeded shasta daisies (the butterflies love them) and yarrow and planted a few established perennials. The yarrow seeds I planted were a mix of red, pink, and white, but the white resembles the wild yarrow we have so we pull it out and it's mostly now only tones of pinks and red. There are also Lamb's Ears because they seed all over my garden but I leave them in this wild area (the bees love them). There are a few other plants, a pink mallow that's 'weedy' but it fills the space and is quite pretty and we also have several lilacs here. Near that area there is also a drift of common old irises which we've allowed to spread. They are in the lower part of the rockery and I will eventually weed some of them out as the bloom time is not very long. If I were deliberately planting a wildflower garden I would not buy a wildflower mix as there could be invasive plants in it. I planted a mix about 14 years ago and still have Dame Hesperis (Dame's Rocket) altho pull out many every year and try to dead-head them ASAP before they seed. It's quite a weed in warmer climates. I would choose seeds of plants I like that are hardy but not invasive and mix them together. Another option is to plant in swaths with various plants and grasses hardy to your area. Keep in mind the moisture requirements of the plants as you decide. The area where I have shastas, mallow, and yarrow needs little watering and only a spring weeding so is easy care. Hi Laura! Thanks! The weather here hasnt been too good to the plumerias lately. The sun just doesnt want to come out! My Divine has smaller blooms now, but the color is stronger on it now (it seems to do that with small blooms). I had blooms as small as half an inch when the plant is heading into winter which is impressive. My divine is actually making another inflo right now though (as well as a few other palms), but the divine inflo isnt actually showing yet so Im hoping that it can hang on until spring! Thanks Randy! Most of my bananas did grow well (my Thai Black, Ice Cream, Saba, and even my Velutina), but my basjoos did not get significantly taller. My Saba and Ice Cream banana has at least 3 feet of new Pseudostem which was great to see. Im hoping that My Ice Cream banana will start fruting this time next year (or better yet, early summer the year after that!) The weather is bad here too. We got almost 3 inches of rain yesterday and its been cloudy all week long. It was a terrible end to summer and not a great start to Fall. Looks like sun next week, but we lose the high 70s for mid to upper 60s! Thats a bit too cold for me since I still want at least one more sunny 80F day. Hopefully winter wont be this bad! -Alex

I think the metal posts work well. You can always get the heavy duty ones...it just depends on how heavy the panels are. I'm kind of thinking of using 2" x 4" metal grid fencing, that comes in 50' rolls. I've used this at my mom's and it works really well. There we did 4' high, but I only want to go 2' to 3' high in the kitchen garden. Then, I'm hoping to wire wooden trellis to the fence, to make it look a little nicer. If I have too tall a fence, it makes the arches look out of proportion...and the deer can still jump over it, anyway :) As for the critters, do you have any kitties? We have barn kitties and I never have anything getting into my garden, except for the deer. The kitties take care of all the other problems, either catching them, or just running them off from the area. I'm sure we still have all kinds of little critters (LOL) some distance from the house.

Oh, I missed a sentence up there LOL, that is the bush/tree with the deck that we cut down. The SO was cutting it while I was taking pics. I had to get them taken before he cut down all the tree/shrubs in pic #2 because I wanted before and after pics. In pic #10 if you look in the background at the bottom of the hill you can see one of the neighbors houses, this is the one I want to block the view from. I am planning on planting some fast growing trees in a line. In pic #9 on the right side of the pic is my holding flowerbed we put in too, I am using it as a nursey bed for young plants. I didn't take a pic of my WS containers LOL. Dan, tell the kids I said thanks for thinking about me, but I think we will leave the scratching and rubbing to lavish on them! LOL. Bunny, I am a country girl through and through, I can't stand the thought of living in the city although we did consider it but only for a minute. I like being in the country and NOT seeing my neighbors everytime I go outside. At the other house the trailer park folk would pull up chairs to watch us that I think that is 1. RUDE and 2. CREEPY, WHO does that? Joan, I am so totally pleased to be here. It is a small country house and it could use some work but I am tickled to finally have a place that I am surrounded by nature and not homes. We even have a nice size front porch to sit out on when we get it cleaned off LOL. It is so peaceful here, with the exception of the little &^*&^* that run up and down the main dirtroad on the trail bikes and 4 wheelers but if I had one I would be too! hehe. I am just so pleased to be here. A lot of folks wanted to see the place and this thread was the easiest way for me to share. In the front yard where that little ridge is, we are putting a flowerbed in there too, to make it more level. Can't understand WHY someone would make a cut out section in the front yard but someone did! Crazy is all I can say. Ok, well, thanks for the comments. Have a great night. :) Fran

Very homey and great use of things. Love the windchime and of course the porch on the shed. I have 4 porches on my house and I'm still jealous that your shed has one! Its too bad so many houses are built without porches nowadays. Yours is a good one!
A friend of mine in my neighborhood just took hers off because to repair it and make it nicer would have raised her taxes so much. (In NH we pay for schools with property taxes, its nuts.)

The path was actually a freebie! We have a friend who lived and worked in an older apartment complex and they were replacing the concrete slabs on all the stairways. He told me the old "stairs" were in the trash and scheduled to be hauled off the next day, so he helped us get enough for the path. I had to argue with the guys of course, they would have angled it straight from point A to point B without the extra curves. lol.

perrr..rect, Perky! A real "down-home" as said above! Luved the slideshow! Would like to see some bigger pics of a couple things, if possible...the shovel scene (painted?)...and another of the windchime...it's quite "shaded" somehow...what items are on your chime? Oh yeah, and the "like my hat" (can't see what it is)??? Milk can looks awesome, too!

You can view the pictures better if you click the "slideshow" option at the top of the page, that makes them larger.
The stove I actually got at a yard sale for $5, the nail keg for $1. The rockers were $5 each all paint missing I brought them home and he painted them a few years back, the duck with the cart was $3 at a yard sale, so a lot of it was super bargain land!

I couldn't do it. I love the wind-chimes & some other stuff, but a lot of it just looks unkempt to me. My personal opinion. Good thing we all have different tastes.
