One weed issue seriously getting way out of control.

When we moved into this home, in the flower bed in front of the house we had these weeds that were about 3 feet tall at their tallest last fall.

They were in a patch about 6 feet by 2 feet.

They were thick like clover at first in the spring (like right now as it starts up again this year).

Last year we pull them up, but they send out shoots under ground everywhere.

They are in a patch 12 feet by 6 feet.

They have taken over more than the flower bed and are even starting to pop up out in the lawn.

They are out of control and if we try to pull them up like last year, we will be pulling up everything we planted as they are coming up and growing into everything.

We live in Shorewood near Joliet IL and there are a lot of prairie plants out here.

I think they might have been imported in the shrubs that were planted when the house was new a couple years ago as I remember pulling them out of the shrubs.

I occasionally helped take care of the house that first year before we moved in.

I do not want to pull up and kill everything only to find I missed a small section of root and they just come back again.

Sue, I wish I had taken a picture while it was climbing and after I had pulled (what I hope to be the entire thing out).soeur has me really worried now after reading up on that wintercreeper. The link was great but how does it appear out of nowhere? The area where it was found used to be a field that was tilled surrounding a telephone pole. When I moved here about 7 years ago I planted it with 3 pryracantha closest to the pole, assorted azaels, crimson barberry, various jap holly etc. It has grown to be rather pretty and hides the pole unless you look up. I can't imagine this thing taking over the entire planting area but now, after reading up on it, I believe it could. Boy, I hope I got it all. I will ask our county forester when he's up my way again to take a look. I will check frequently to make sure it doesn't go wild again. I had so many scratches from the pyracantha, I felt like pulling them up too.

Are you getting spark after it dies? IF not it maybe the kill switch or ignition parts that are bad or intermittent? I would also check the kill switch make sure it's good? Does it hit off carb. cleaner when it won't start (by spraying 2 second blast directly down the carb. venturi or removing the spark plug and spraying 1 second bast directly into the comb. chamber. IF so, when you get it to run and pull the throttle can you see gas itomizting from the fuel manifold that has the mid and high speed gas port? Last thought would be if it's getting spark when it dies and it will run off carb. cleaner till it runs out of cleaner you sparyed in. I would say you've either got vacuum leak (internal in the carb., at the intake manifold or at the jug where it held on at the crank case (usually 3 or 4 screws) or carb. diagram installed backwards especially on the needle and set side or internal passage plugged in the carb. or through the carb base to the crankcase. IF this didn't spark some ideas then I would got to Zamacarb.com or walbro.com and study the troubleshoot trees see if that may help?

at worst.. in fall ... when there are cool nights ... ID individual plants ... and trim the back ... dig them out.. remove all them weeds growing thru the roots ... renovate the bed ... replant.. and mulch heavy ... like all of us.. you want the easy way out.. sometimes ... its all about some hard work ... try what they suggest ... for this summer.. if you lose.. get to work ... or just get rid of the whole ... you didnt favor us with a pic .... so we really dont understand how bad it all is ... MOST perennials ... 99%.. can be dug and moved ... mid summer isnt the best for all plants ... depending on your experience level ... [i could do it now.. and not care if i lost half the plants.. and that is the key ... lol ... not that i would do it better... its that i would NOT have a stroke if i failed ... anything would look better than it is now ... never fear your failures... you wont learn anything.. nor get anything done if you dont try .] as an experiment.. you could do half the bed now ... see how well you did.. by fall ... then do half in fall ... and see if you do better... comparing next spring ... and you instantly become.. the new CP expert on GW ... never forget.. failure.. and empty spot in the garden bed .... is just an opportunity for something new ... its called gardening ... ken

I would not want to use herbicides in woods. I have found that regular cutting e.g. with a brush cutter, will control these weeds. By cutting them repeatedly when under a foot high they will never get a chance to seed and other things will have a chance to grow amongst them. I have all 3 in my wood and I just have them cut two or three times a year, starting as soon as they reach 8 - 12 inches. Herbicides will kill all broad leaved plants, including any desirables. You can't specify one which only kills those three. Nettles and thistles are perennial and will regrow, although weaker. Garlic Mustard is annual so repeated cutting before it can seed will eventually get rid of it.

Thumbnails? Not for an old f*rt, MUHAHAHAHAHHAAHA!!!!!

But that first pic is up against the brick, like a ground cover plant. Spray Round Up on it, keeping the spray confined to where you want the spray to go. Use some old sheets to cover up up you want to live. Spray when it gets warmer and whatever is actively growing.

You say that they keep coming up every year, means that you are allowing them to seed. Kill before they seed, allow to die, rip out the carnage, plant what you want in there, mulch the area heavy, sprinkle some Preen and all should be fine - really.

Number 2, seriously I can't see, even when clicking on it and going to your photobucket. Looks like lettuce to me.
Either buy some Blue Cheese dressing and enjoy it and kill it, like said above, LOL!

The brick pic was #1 and the close up was #2.
All I have is my cell phone camera.

Last year we did not let it go to seed and pulled up everything we could find including all the under surface shoots we could find and get a-hold of but this spring is looks like we did nothing at all!

It's now intertwined with everything else we planted as if it grew back while under the snow this winter.

I also don't want to use roundup over a 3 foot by 12 foot section of sod that borders the flower bed.

I get the feeling we need to just dig up a 2 foot deep 8 foot wide trench along the front of the house!
