I've been wanting one of these............

Went into HD to look for bird feeders and HAD to check out the house plants. Found this little guy in a group with 5 other plants on the bottom shelf of a 5 tiered cart. It was not receiving ANY light and was dry as a bone. I think maybe an employee was gathering up a little group of plants to buy when they got paid or something.

Well, I have been wanting one of these Stromanthes, so I bought it. The bruised leaves make me think it has been battered around a bit, but otherwise seems ok.

I meant to add.....who has one of these? Are they fairly easy or fussy?

You struck gold!

Given and very good well draining mix with lot's of indirect sunlight, that plant will do wonders for you, not that you need a hand, since you seem to grow just about anything beautifully!

I want another one now. Such nice colors.

I wonder though if they are spider mite magnets?

Good for you! For the longest time I too wanted a rocker. Not sure why, but thought it would be, well, peaceful to sit and ponder the day's problems or whatever. My mother had wanted one for a long time and I bought her one for her birthday one year. She loved it. After she died my dad gave it to my sister. I think it sits in her basement. Well I decided I'd watch for a deal on one sometime but I wanted a good heavy one to support me and be a little higher than the cheaper ones since I have longer legs. The one I wanted was in the area of $300 or more, well, couldn't justify it. Then one day a neighbor was having a moving sale. They had lived there 2 months and were moving out. (Should I take it personally???) They had a pretty heavy, though slightly smaller than I would have preferred, wooden rocker for $20! She was trying to move things out, I offered her $15 and she said YES! (she wanted to get rid of it.) So I got a rocker. I've been so pleased. And although it was lower, I took a cushion from a busted couch I had in the basement and put on it. Fits it fine, raises me up a couple inches and even the cat loves it! Now I'll sit there and relax, especially if I'm waiting for someone or something. Maybe have some coffee or a beer, or just rock away a little tension. It's worn, but they call that "patina" don't they? And yes I need to glue a couple things on it. That's what happens when you run a furnace without a humidifier as they obviously did, but it's still a solid chair and serves my needs perfectly well. And at a price that made me smile. Every now and then something like this happens. I think it's destiny. It was meant for me to find it that day just as you found your rocker. Rock on!

Could you get together a group of 'sellers' and have an open house for 1-2 nights where people could buy for Christmas? I've seen a sale where someone would open up their house the week of Thnksgiving/first week of December. Different sellers were set up in various rooms in the house. Only the person running the open house would sell hand crafted items. The other sellers were the home business type that sold things like AVON, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, candles, etc. There may have been a little overlap, but for the most part the sellers sold different items. Postcard invites were sent out in advance by the sellers from their list of contacts. Everyone wa invited to bring a friend. My understanding is the sellers did very well.

Merrill, and the saddest part about the return of jobs and having little time at home is that a full half or more of those lovely gardens will die. People swear they will keep them up, but many won't. They didn't before. Perhaps many will keep a small veg garden, but most of them will discover that working, taking care of their house and being with friends again is more important, and just let them go or not plant them again aside from a couple of tomato plants. We'll see, but I know it's what would happen to me if I didn't have time on my hands. When I once moved out to the country, I planted a huge veggie garden. I was a SAHM at the time, and had plenty of time to spare on it. Then I had to go back to work, and my garden tractor broke down, and it was just too much to take care of, so I didn't plant another garden for the next 3 years I was there, nor did I care for the flowers I had planted. A 90 minute commute to town and back every day, activities with my son, helping out my mother on weekends, and my garden went to hell. I finally just sold my place and moved to Florida. Then the same thing happened there with my house and 1/4 acre yard. Sometimes life is just too much to fit everything in. It has to be a passion to prioritize it, and many people don't have a passion for gardening, it was just something everyone else was doing, so they did it too. Some will have discovered it's a passion, and most won't. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Oh, don't say that.......never had a spider mite problem until I got into Brugmansias. I bought a miticide to keep handy and use it!

Wow!!!! What a pretty, pretty plant. I am a total sucker for variegated plants. Im currently in search of a cordyline i saw in a plant book. It is tri-colored. I teally like your plant.

Add another to the want list.

Hi Elkay,
I've had this Stromanthe for more than 1 year now and it's doing really well. Usually, beautiful plants like these, don't do really well for me(I guess I pick on them too much). I have it in 5-1-1 mix, very close to a window where it gets afternoon sun. Water when pot is light. Old leaves start drying but new shots come out all the time. All I do is cut the old ones when they get ugly.

Elkay, glad you got one! :)

Stromanth trio is one beautiful plant. If you were to order online, it'd cost a lot more than buying locally.

Over-wintering Brugmansia's indoors is one way to invite mites...they're very fussy plants.

There's no reason Stromanth should attract mites, unless air is too dry and soil kept continuously wet, but that applies to most tropicals.

Rinse leaves once a week..they dote on humidity, and showering should help keep dust and insects away.

Stromanth, 'related to Maranta/prayer plants, is much easier to grow.

Ada, your Stromanthe is doing great. I believe Curious Star agrees.. :)

Handsome plant, Elkay.

I too am a nut for variegates & I saw this plant (one just like it) at HD a week ago. I picked it up & made eyes at it fondly, 'til reality set it & I asked myself, 'but where will I put it?' Back on its shelf at HD was the answer.

Seriously, no more room at my home.

Glad somebody got this beauty, it really is a looker, pls. enjoy for us all!!

I got one of these this last summer from Lowes, they had two sizes, so I bought the smaller one to see if I can even keep it alive. I have mine in a west window sill sitting on rocks with water for humidity. This plant looks like it loves alot of humidity, and doesnt like to dry out completly. My plant is doing well so far, gets one new leaf here and there, hasn't grown hardly at all, but hasnt gotten smaller either...but it is a beautiful plant, I love the colors. I haven't found a pot to go with it yet, but I may have to get a plain one so it doesn take away from the beauty of the leaves...I may go and buy a bigger one someday. My lowes seems to get a few in here and there, so maybe after Christmas I'll go find one.
