Best Plum and Apple for San Diego

Hello everyone, I'm trying to help my friend that is just getting into fruit trees pick out a good Plum and Apple tree. He wants a plum that is super sweet and juicy with red/dark colored flesh. He is also looking for a good sweet crunchy apple that doesn't need a lot of chill hours. We live in San Diego and don't get many chill hours. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

An Anna Apple tree. I have a semi-dwarf and it gives me two crops a year.
There is a Japanese plum with purple insides. Satsumu, possibly. Sweet and juicy. You need a fair amount of space for it though. Raccoons will can beat you to the fruit if they are around.

Simon--I am from northern San Diego county 50+yrs. (now in Az) Anna is a great apple for there or a fugi does just as well. I have always had great luck with the satsuma and it makes great jam. Every house we have had I always planted one. Try and stay away from the box stores where the trees are stressed. There is a great nursey on the 15 (back side of Vista) or Clausons Nursey in Vista both family owned. Also one in San Marcos on San Marcos blvd. Good Luck

No,it's not wrong,but Peach Leaf Curl is a common malady. I also use the Chlorothalonil spray (Bonide's Fung-onil) on my Plums and Pluots.It's a multi-purpose fungicide.However,it is not an organic product. I just looked at some info about Liqui-cop and at least one person reports they were having success against PLC with it.I'll have to check it out further. Brady

I live about 10 miles inland San Diego. We probably average around 300 chill hours. Splash sets like crazy for me. I have had 50 on year two, 200-300 on year three and four. Dapple dandy sets good for me too. I had about 10 in year two, 50 on year three, and 100+ on year four. My dapple dandy have been huge. People mistake them for apples on the tree. Flavor King and Emerald drop have about 10 each after one year. Hard to tell how well they will set when mature. Each one had 100's of blooms this spring. Depends.... many people just walk by these things. I've seen loquats falling and rotting for the past 3-4 weeks. No one is eating them! I see fallen citrus/plums it's pretty sick. Some kind of market failure because people buy these things at the store yet they are rotting all around the neighborhood. I think OP will be okay. If he turns some passerby onto fresh fruit, that's a good thing.

Your best bet is to plant what you want where you want. Make a map of the plantings. You may not get 100% growth. It doesnt matter. You may not get max yields. Thats ok too. They will still be better than store bought. Learn what grows where. Make adjustments in future years.

Hi just wanted to add a few more good varieties for your area and info about the ones suggested. Dorsett golden apple was developed in the Bahamas and is known to produce fruit from southern California to Phoenix Arizona It's chill hours are 100 to 250
Anna's chill hours 100 to 300.
For plums I like the weeping Santa rosa it's self fertile and chill hours are 150 to 400. Regular Santa rosa needs 300 to 500 chill hours and satsuma need about 300 chill hours. The last to were developed by the great Luther Burbank of Santa rosa ca around 1900.
