I don't have Bermuda, but from everything I've read, it fills in very aggressively, so you shouldn't have a bare spot for very long. If the bare spot is really large, you could speed things up by getting a few sprigs from other areas in the lawn and planting them in the bare spot.

how large an area? bermuda will fill itself back in quickly as long as it gets full sun in teh area and is watered and fed. but yes, you could either seed the spot or transplan a little to teh area. problem with transplanting is you then leave a dead spot elsewhere!

This is no small area. I went out and stepped it off and its about 14 x16.The neighbor next to me will have about that much also. I'm thinking I'd better get some seed. I just don't know when to plant bermuda seed or where to get good seed.

Well, sorta. Usually, cool weather grass are used in zone 6 or colder. Stays green a lot longer than bermuda which is classified as warm weather grass usually for zone 7 or warmer. They don't really start growing until April, May when it's warm enough for rapid growth/green up. Seems 80 during day, 60 at night will get them started.

Bermuda here is starting to green up. Temp here today was 83, yesterday 86. Way too hot for this time of year. We have had no measureable precipitation since Oct. So I am watering. Most people here plant fescue, but the bermuda was here when we moved to this house 42 years ago. The old man who planted it overseeded with blue grass, so in the shade I have blue grass. I would have killed the bermuda years ago, but the houses on both sides have it also, so I'm out of luck. I'm still wondering the right time to seed bermuda.

In late spring or early summer after soil temperatures are around 65-70 degrees or higher and all danger of freeze or frost is past.

Interesting. I agree, not much you can do with bermuda if they're all around you. Late spring-early summer is the earliest you can start planting bermuda seeds. They really respond to fertilizer and fill in fast.

Another note, your original bermuda has been around for a long time, it's possible that they have adapted to the extreme cold weather (reduced winter kill) so you may think about plugging them in that area from corner part of the lawn somewhere.

I'm in KS also, (NW), and have some bermuda. I would think your main problem with seeding bermuda is that the seed available now will probably grow grass very different than the old, common burmuda that has been in your yard for 50 years.

I helped an uncle in Topeka plant a bermuda back yard about 50 years ago. I don't think seed was available. We plugged the lawn.

I extended the area I have in bermuda by using "plugs" acquired by edging my older bermuda lawn. I plugged the new area sparsely in early-mid May, and had good, even coverage two months later.

Lou is right also about taking plugs from anywhere in your lawn. Very small plugs will work if kept damp. You could take plugs very little larger than core aeration plugs and plant in the bare area. Some fertilizer and water should fix it in very little time.

Thanks all of you, I'm going to try the plugs. Should I do anything to the soil first? Besides leveling it out I mean.When they moved that big machine into the yard, it left 2 big ruts. Can I just fill them in with soil?

yes, level them out with soil. It may take a several times to level it out completely.
