You should be able to postpone the jury duty. Give them a call.

They don't even allow a call (except in some very strictly defined circumstances: >65, student, teacher). Show up the first day and plead your case to the judge himself. I know there has to be some other accommodation for extreme cases, say if you were headed out of the country. I'll try on the first day anyway.

Really. No calls? That doesn't sound right.
My wife received a summons for district court jury duty in June, but we were going to be tied up synchronizing and inseminating several groups of cows that month, so she called the office and they just re-scheduled her for August. No problem whatsoever.

My DH was able to call and get out of jury duty because we were going to be gone on vacation. That's really odd that you can't.

For me I found the key was to ask to "reschedule", not to "cancel" or "excuse" -- here they are happy to do the former but will never do the latter. They also don't tell you when you call up that you even have the option to reschedule.

Here, if you can prove that you already had the reservations and travel plans made, they'll allow you to reschedule. They are very strict here! My DH got fined $350 for ignoring his summons! (Dummy!)
I have been excused due to the extremely emotionally disturbed students I worked with at the time. I explained that they could bring in a substitute, but having an untrained person there would make it more dangerous for everyone there, including the students. He asked when I could serve, I said Aug., and I never got called back!

Really, goner, I'd sure try to get it re-scheduled; if you've already made your reservations, they oughta accomodate you.

The "summons" lists those three reasons and explicitly states says the staff is not allowed to deal with any other reason, just the judge, and he will only do it on the first day. Bureaucrats, especially judicial ones, can be obnoxiously arrogant. Suppose I were in China for a month?

In Atlanta, Georgia they just did a front page article saying about one third of the people summoned for jury duty did not show up, AND they never followed up on these people with a warrant or anything.

What would they do if you were out of the country when the summons arrived, and you wouldn't be back before your date? There HAS to be a way. What if you never got it because the PO lost it? it's not like they can prove you received it.
