How to get rid of gooseberry sawfly?

nygardener

One of my gooseberry plants (a Hinnomaki yellow) has lost all its leaves the past two Junes to little green worm-like caterpillars that I suspect are gooseberry sawfly (though I didn't see any black spots). Once they emerge, they tear through the plant so quickly that if I've been gone for a few days, the plant is already defoliated. Last year the plant was attacked twice, and this year it hasn't flowered (the leaves are just coming back now).

How can I get rid of these critters? I garden organically, so I would not like to spray.
