I haven't ever made one, but did receive a gift from a friend in the 70"s that did macrame. You might find instructions if you do a search for macrame plant hangers.

Macrame and hemp jewelry is a hobby of mine - (college student, can you guess? :) I've made two of them before, and it's quite easy. Also fun and fulfilling, I'm always so happy to receive compliments on them.
You can do a quick search for a tutorial on youtube or instructables that will be really helpful.

one is with my mother and the other my grandmother - maybe I'll post a photo next time I visit them.

I used to make plant hangers out of yarn - no beads or anything, just simple hangers to hold one, two or three plants.

Didnt know it was called that!!!!

I also had the idea of yarn... So i bought a skein today and also had my husband get my yarn tote out of storage!!

I've been looking around for a plant hanger without any success at all! (Haven't thought to look on-line tho')..

Since hemp has now caught on the way it has, I'm sure that the prices of hemp string has sky-rocketed.. not too sure about the strength of yarn.. does it work?

I'm looking at the hook where I had the spider in straight MG and a self-watering hanger.. operative word being 'had'..

Let me know if you go ahead and make some up.. wooden beads included of course for this old Hippie.. I'd be a willing customer!

YAY. Yes Yarn will be strong enough. The macrame knots make it strong enough. Also, you can use it for a littler plant. I am getting started on one today...no pattern or anything. Just kind of going off what I have in my head and it will be a simple one to see how it goes, how much material i need for them...round aboutly.

Charlie, I would love to make you one for getting me addicted. ;) Please tell me your needs. Pot size...and if all goes well here with this one, i will be making them for presents for family and for you and for that sweet person who gave me all the baby plants. ;)

It's a lovely idea, just pls keep in mind that over time, hemp may rot (all natural fibers will). While they may look really nice, unless they're synthetic, they'll rot over time.

Yarns on the other hand, if synthetic (like washable knitting yarns used for making baby things) won't. Just so you know.

I recently bought a whole bunch of old macrame yarn at a 2nd hand store near me, I believe they're from the 70's, never been used...but their's quite some interesting colors like bright oranges. Also some hobby/craft stores sell macrame yarn but they're quite pricy but come in better colors..I bought a big thing of off-white macrame yarn and beads and hoops. I know how to make plain plant hangers, and have made a couple, but I wanted to learn how to make the more fancy ones. My dad's girlfiend gave me several books she's had since the 70's that show how to do macrame, but those are a bit too much for me or my taste lol.

I do like macrame but you have to be careful with the plants you put in the them cause some plants are a pain to get in, and if you ever need to take them out, it becomes a challenge to not break any stems or leaves.

Macrame is so fun! I love it! but it puts a dent in the money situation, can's seem to find a cheap enough place for the material. Stared with clothes line rope. Couldn't make what I wanted tho, wasn't enough rope. So I am looking online for the materials. Hope I can find something cheap enough and good quality... but I love it! (btw, hemp makes me sneeze!! lol)

Does anyone have patterns to share??? I was going to wing it but stupid me realized im not the best at winging somethings and operate better with a plan or instructions. Also, with limited time to myself, i dont have the time or energy to think.

Also, does anyone know where to get the rings to attach the material to and to hang the planter.

Can't help much with patterns, I do have a book, but alter most of what I do to fit for what I want.

If you have a store that sells things for horses and what not, they have rings there, least the one here does, fairly priced too. Hobby shops only have maybe 2 sizes and they are too big for what I want.

As far as patterns go, I went online and found a book or 2 on it. Only found one store that sold any books on it, and most of that was jewely making, everyone else said they don't have anything for it. So it is the online shopping for me... and hope I get what I want..

So very sad that this art form is going out of style, so much can be done with it.. Going to try to make my Sadie a collar and matching leash for Christmas this year! :)

I have been looking for macrame plant hangers for years. Some of the big box stores sell them in the spring and summer. I found most of mine at the flea mkt for 2-3 dollars.
I have never had a problem with jute rotting inside the house. Matter a fact I have had jute hangers I made hanging outside for 2 years and they are still sound. My hubby put them away this year, said its a shame to leave them out all winter.
Also there are some on ebay for sale, and truthfully its just about as cheap to buy them online with shipping as to make them yourself. I added it up with yarn and beads and it came out to more then buying online. Just check out the sellers rating/reputation before you buy.
When I put plants into macrame I found its easiest to hang the macrame first then drop the plant into it. If you try to do it without hanging first its a lot harder and I did more damage to the plant.

Forget hemp or cord. Look what I found while searching patterns for hangers. How easy, affordable and pretty. Sure adds a different dynamic doesnt it. I love this one!

Macrame'! An age old craft that seemed to peak during the 60' and 70's, then die out... until the return of "surfer" jewelry made from hemp and other materials.

Yes, I've done a lot in the macrame' department, including plant hangers, wall hangings, curtains, jewelry, double pot hangers, hanging tables, lamps, woven chairs, etc... hammocks and bed hangings are more expensive and complicated, but are gorgeous when finished.

How complicated they are depends upon the knots used and the sequences of the various knots. Your basic square knot and half knot are the most common, I believe... and then there's learning how to incorporate the top loop, beads or decorations, and the chosen method of finishing off the bottom.

The boring parts are cutting the various lengths of jute or hemp, or even nylon or synthetic cording, and the endless knot sequences. I've made quick, rudimentary hangers from baling twine, though it's a bit stiff to work with.

Craft stores still carry the materials and inexpensive magazines and craft books with instructions. You might also find some patterns and instructions for free download via the internet. If Googled, probably a million results will be given, and you can search exactly what you're after.

It's fairly easy to learn, a nice craft for gift giving, and very versatile... as you can make or cover all manner of items.

The main key is learning to make your knots with an even tension.

The fabric idea is a lovely one I hadn't seen before.

I would however, be concerned about the same issues of natural fibers rotting over time & the plant crashing to the floor.

You'd have to use a fabric blend to avoid this, anything w/ some synthetic in it like Polyester or Nylon (not Rayon, as that too will rot, it's made of cellulose fiber from wood pulp, like paper, so it too could rot).

Nice ideas, could be interesting projects.

I don't do Macrame` but I have crocheted many plant slings or hangers.
