vendor recommendations for hanging baskets

I'd like to get some cuttings I've started and some smaller plants I've gotten into hanging baskets. The problem I'm having is that the box stores and nurseries around me all sell large 8"+ baskets and I need some smaller ones for my little plants.

Is there even such a thing as a 3"-4" hanging basket? I have several small plants that are taking up precious square footage in my BigLots greenhouse :) and I'd like to get them up and out.

Are there vendors that you have used in the past to get small baskets and accessories? Are there other inventive ways of doing this? I've thought about using wire, chain, clothes hangers, etc... to string up pots but I'd like them to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.

Maybe something like these would work for the time being. I could just punch some holes in my cheap plastic containers and hang them with these.

I'd still like to find some small inexpensive hanging pots. Plastic is fine.

Hi, there are small pots out there, I just bought some a few weeks back from a lady in Ca. I believe she got them from a vendor in Arizona. Send me an email and I will provide you with the website

They are 4.5" white plastic pots with saucer and hanger. Great for the rooted cuttings that aren't big enough for the 6" or 8" baskets - this vender also sells those sizes, which are also hard to find!

Here in southern Louisiana (z9a) the hort. department at the university tried tuberous begonias. I think they got a flower or two. That was in the greenhouse with cooling. A number of people I know tried them, but nobody succeeded. I grew them when I lived in western Washington (state) but believed the locals when they told me not to try here, so I don't really have personal experience. If you would be satisfied with two or three flowers, okay. Otherwise, i would say there are So Many begonias that really love it here and do so well so easily, that torturing some for such a disappointing display doesn't seem productive to me.

How big is "Too big to be a houseplant?" Is that with or without pruning? Liz, I think what you actually need to worry about is whether they are suitable for hanging baskets, since that's how you want to grow them. Scented geraniums vary in their natural sizes and growth habits. A plant that only wants to grow straight up is going to look silly in a hanging basket even if the plant is a reasonable size. Hanging baskets look best with spreading or trailing plants. Look for those words in catalog descriptions. Do an internet image search for the varieties you want to grow, so you can see what a mature plant looks like and what the blooms look like. And if you can find a place locally that sells them, try to sniff before you buy. Scent perception varies in humans, and you may not think they smell like their names. I've grown a few scenteds. From your post it sounds like you really want a flowering plant, and scented geraniums are mainly a foliage plant. I've grown several that never flowered for me, ever. If you grow them, do it because you enjoy the leaves. I only have one right now, "Lady Plymouth." She does flower, but only in summer when I let her get big, and never as exuberantly as the zonals and ivies. Dowlinggram is right about the flowers being small. I cut my "Lady Plymouth" back to stumps in fall, as I do for my zonal and ivy geraniums. None of them bloom in winter with this treatment. Please recommend an outdoor hanging basket plant

I have two Pathos vines "Devil's vine" growing under my eaves. Pathos is probably the most common houseplant. Seems that everyone's got at least one indoors. Anyways,,, outdoors in the protected shade of my eave they thrive. They are about 5 feet long. I'm going to start trimming them from the bottom and see how big I can get the leaves to grow. I've seen them are big as 1ft wide. The only drawback is that a hard freeze can kill the leaves. So I bring them into the garage when the temps are predicted to drop. It's not the exact care-free winter plant you're looking for. But they are really worth the effort. Also on the plus side, they are very hardy and can withstand plenty of mistreatment such as missed watering or heat.

Thanks for the links. I also read on a different thread about using swivel hooks so as to rotate the baskets for sunlight and even growth.

There's also a vendor selling them on Ebay. She's the one I bought mine from and they're very reasonable;not over a $1.00 a pot. They're really cute and made very well.

Periodically I have found smaller hanging baskets at our local Dollar Stores. I've had some of them for almost 5 yrs. and still in good condition. We have extrememly hot summers, I was surprised the plastic held up so well. I have found other garden things at the Dollar Stores, decorative pots, the long window box type of planters, etc.

The seller is miar. I don't know whether she's selling any this week but you can always do a search for the seller and send her a message. She's great to deal with.

Has anyone ever tried drilling holes in small clay pots and hanging them? I am thinking of trying it, but don't want to destroy my pots.
