rotting dieff

I bought 2 Tropic Snow dieffenbachias recently. It's been a few years since I had any dieff's and I've grown them successfully in the past. They are fairly hard to find here for some reason.

One is doing quite well, and the other would get yellowing leaves. After removing it from the pot, I found the stems were rotted.

I read some older posts where a few people have great success in rooting dieff's in water, freddeb and plantbabies come mind, and I thought that it's worth a try.

Today I checked and the bottoms were rotted and smelly.

I decided to just chop the stem and try to root pieces in soil, like I did with my yucca. I'm disappointed that mine didn't take in water, when other people have success. Especially since the leaves were a nice healthy green, and they are now in the garbage. Hopefully I'll have a number of rooted babies from the 5 stalks I've got in soil.

Any thoughts on what I could have done to make them root in water?

Sherry
