My Pout House

Hi all...long time lurker here! The first time I visited this forum was a few years ago and have been hooked ever since. One of the first garden junk photos I saw here was the "Little Garden Porch" which is in the GJ Inspiration Album. It certainly "inspired" me. Just had to have one...I know you all can relate. Anyway, I have finally gotten my act together (a digital camera and uploading lessons from my 14 yr. old!) and would like to share what I call my Pout House. By the way, everything except the clock was either something we had on hand or was found dumpster diving...I like to call it "street shopping". It also helps that hubby is a carpenter.

That's really nice and I have just the place for one of these. I've been thinking of a privacy fence for a certain part of the back, back where I keep "my" stuff. One of these will do the trick much, much better.

What a great idea! I never thought of having a little "porch" like that. It is a very clever way of having a protected sitting area in the yard that offers some privacy and doesn't take up much room. Thanks for sharing!

I'm with Duane in thinking it could be temperature. Here's why: I have a couple of plants in small pots on which I continually pinch out the growing tips & prune off the larger leaves. The result is a very compressed mound of small foliage, a very interesting specimen and a wonderful gift, the only cost of which is the price of the pot & a little time (plant grown from cuttings - thus, free). But, I'm getting away from the subject & why I think it's temperature related. Container soil temperatures follow the ambient temperatures closely. E.g. when ambient temperatures move from 60 - 80*, the container temperature isn't far behind, perhaps a day at most in large containers, and a few hours in smaller containers. Here in MI, we just finished a couple of weeks of weather that was very warm (for us). ;o) While day temperatures hovered around the 90* mark, night temps were around 70*. During that time, the coleus were needing pinching/pruning every other day. Early this week, temperatures have struggled to make 70* with nights being substantially cooler. The result is I haven't needed to prune since last Mon (today being Sat), so, I believe the cause to be temperature related. It's also possible that the somewhat gloomy days have contributed to lack of growth here as well. Thanks everyone. All great feedback. I used it as an opportunity to practice my meager pruning skills, and basically hacked most of the branches down ton 12-ish inches. It looks a little like a modern tea rose after pruning, but this should give it plenty of rest while it rebuids, and in a shape I like. Boy do I know about resilient. For a couple of years I had a Madame Plantier still planted in the 2-3 gallon black pot that it was in when I won at the el cerrito celebration several years ago. It sat on a hot concrete patio, mostly not watered, completely neglected for a couple years. Assuming it was really really dead (sung like the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, for entertainment value), I reached down to pick it up and toss it, and something in me decided to try to see if it was actually still alive. So I watered it a few times. And wouldn't ya know it, from under the soil, it sent up a couple new basal canes. The old canes and the old stump were dead, but something new came up from the roots. After all that time. I repotted it into a 5 gallon pot last spring, and this year it is covered with little buds just waiting to open. I'm hoping the same happens with my Rose du Roi. Thanks! -kmama

Thank you both. It seems you were both dead on in your evaluations. After I told my husband about the way the flowers were looking he went out and gave them a big drink. I checked them out this morning and they were as erect and perky as could be. What's more the one that really had his head bowed down lat night is now showing the pink that will be the flower. The mother of all fragrant hostas- planteginea, the species. All others are usually sports, like Guacamole, Royal Standard, Stained Glass. Most of the fragrant hostas are poor seed producers. BTW, it was Guacamole that was scenting up the air last night! And has been for about two weeks! Just like brugs, they do it at night! Kylie, I knew you would feel for me!! Thanks everyone! Sheree-I don't mind a bit if you copy it! We decorate it for Halloween and for Xmas. Believe it or not this past Halloween we had a "grown up" ask "who lives there?" We got a good giggle out of it. Anyhow...yes I have more pictures of current and past projects around here that I will post.
