By 'hardy' I assume you mean 'nearly destructible', right? (Hardiness in plants is usually a term used to describe the cold tolerance...but I don't think you mean that.)

This would be a good time of year for you to bring home a Christmas Cactus that you fall in love with. Since the culture is different from the other two plants you have, you'll stretch your wings a bit. Learning about how to take care of your new plant is half the fun! I'll attach a link to a search right here in this forum, just to get you started, in case you're interested.

Christmas Cactus, with a teensy bit of special care, are pretty much fool-proof, as far as I'm concerned.

There are lots of houseplants that are easy to grow. Philodendron (scandens is simple and likes shade), Pothos, Peperomia, Aglaonema, peace lily, Snake plant and Monstera are just a few examples. You can put some plants outdoors for the summer too in a shady area, they will appreciate it. Have fun! I think you'll be hooked in no time.

Many of the Sanseveria are nearly indestructible. I had one that survived for 13 years on office fluorescent lighting and stale balck coffee. Start with those called snake plant and skimp on water.

Depends on how much light you have available indoors. Do you have bright indirect sunlight near a window? If so, you can grow a lot more than if you have little light available. Begonias are easy in bright indirect light. Cast Iron plant and Snake Plant are good in low light. Direct sun is only good for cactus. (Anyone agree/disagree with that? Feel free to expond.) Humidity is also a factor, and plants need it versus dry hot air which will kill plants. So keep them away from heat ducts. The classic spot for plants due to likelihood of good humidity is over the kitchen sink. It is simple to hang a shelf there and a grow light, which is how mine is set up. Photo available. I was going to suggest begonias too, and quirkpod has some very good points about light. Probably the best begonias if you have good light are the canes (Angel Wings)and shrub-like, and if your light is not so bright the rhizomatous group has many very easy and tolerant ones as long as you don't over-water. Many have beautiful leaves and are much easier (usually) than the more often seen Rexes. There are also a lot of gesneriads that are very easy, again depending on your conditions. Some need it warm, some need it cool--fascinating family. You can grow nothing but gesneriads and totally puzzle your friends as to what those plants are!

I second the Sansevieria, Pothos and Philodendron. Very easy care plants for beginners. Whatever you choose, please make sure your soil is aerated/draining. Those thick, black heavy soils can cause death in your plants.

I have a small Jade Plant in a Southern facing window that is doing fine. The shape is very cool to me. As long as you have a window with good light and you let it get dry between waterings, mine seems to be almost indestructable. Actually, I forgot about it once and the leaves got VERY shrivelled, but I just watered it again and the leaves plumped back up in a matter of hours!

ZZ Plants are great too. I keep mine in medium to bright light, but they can be kept in bright, medium or low light situations. They are not bothered by pests and need very little water. Mine only gets water about once every 4 - 6 weeks depending on the time of year.

I've had a giant snow tropic dumbcane for about 3 months. I'm loving it so far. It grows like crazy and likes to get dry before being watered again. The leaves are beautiful.

I predict you'll have at least 30 more plants by this time next year. ;-) I started out with one measley plant and had over 40 of them a year later. There are folks around here with hundreds of them.

I keep most of my plants in or near my large south window. In Minnesota it's hard to give them to much sun, the problem is getting enough sun especially in the winter when you can go a couple of weeks without seeing the sun. And in the summer the sun is at a higher angle in the sky so you really don't get that much direct sun either. Since you are PA I suspect your sunlight conditions would be somewhat similar to mine.

I have a 30 year old spider plant and several Sansevarias that are over 10.
