Hi! This forum has inspired me.

I recently found this forum when searching for ideas on how to make a flower "bed" out of an old bed. Wow! Now I see all sorts of things I can do. It immediately inspired me to start searching local for neat things to use in the garden. Already I have scored a claw foot tub and a wooden screen door, both FREE off of craigslist. My DH and I are in the process of downsizing and are about to build in Asheville, NC. I have oodles of glassware, silver and china from my mother's and grandmother's estates that we had planned to sell at an estate sell. Knowing that I will not get anything for these things, I am thrilled to have found a new use for them.

You guys have done a great job in the FAQ section. I was going to ask a bunch of questions but it seems you've already answered everything.

It may be awhile before I have anything to share, but I'm sure I'll be checking in quite often.

Welcome ncamy!! It sounds like you are sitting on a goldmine of glasware, and you scored some very impresive freebies from Craigslist. A claw foot tub has been on my wishlist for ages. I saw ONE for sale and the guy wanted $200. I think everyone here watches Antiques Roadshow and thinks their junk is worth a fortune. lol

I know, isn't this a great forum? And everyone here is really NICE!! (There are a couple forums where people get snarky, and I think, "Okaaay, I'm going back to Garden Junk where all the friendly people hang." LOL)

There's so many creative minds here. Between the posts and their links to their blogs, I could spend all day just checking everything out. Wish I had the time! Lots of talent and inspiration.

Yankees!!!!!!!!......Yankees here?......Oh my Gawd I didn't know they was Yankees here!!!!!!........:) Oh, relax, Paul! I can't speak for the others (you'll just have to watch those people! LOL), but all my people are Southern and I was born in the South, and though by circumstances was transplanted North, I was raised on Southern home training and sweet tea (didn't even know there was any other kind until college, when I started dating a real Yankee). Jim, about the Austins' prevalence: As Jeri and others have so astutely pointed out, that's just marketing. People seem to be obsessed with the Brits and their lifestyles, their names (look at the baby name trends, especially for girls), their TV shows, their movie stars, their accents... somehow, people seem to think, all things British are somehow better and of a higher, more refined and educated stature. So of course they eat up the Austin propaganda. Maybe the Germans need better press. And also, sorry to say, but some folks are just ignorant. Watching QVC the other night (oh the shame!), I saw this female host on a gardening show with this guy peddling an Austin collection. "Oh, I've never SEEN blooms like this; this is a truly EXTRAORDINARY rose." And she meant every single word. Now, we who are acquainted with the antique world know this is nothing rare or super-special, but for those who have only ever seen a hybrid tea... That's why it's up to us to educate. So maybe disdain isn't the answer, just education...

Thank you for all the great comments! I am constantly digging up and pulling out corydalis. I love it, and find it all over my yard--I'm happy for all the volunteers, but it's amazing how well that spreads in my yard. I've always thought it looked like a yellow bleeding heart, and only recently learned it is closely related. The big tree in the middle of the yard is some type of oak, not sure what kind. I also have a maple (I think a soft one), that is not in any of the pictures but provides lots of shade, and some kind of very tall, skinny conifer. The rest of the shade comes from other people's yards--mostly oaks. I chose most of the plants for this garden when my neighbor had a mature tall apple(?) tree in his yard that made my yard very shady. Well, he chopped it down last year, so now I have quite a bit of afternoon sun--some of the plants wilt tremendously in July & August, but if I water every day, they seem to stay alive. Guess that's the drawback to neighbors--never know what they are going to do with their yards! :) Pat--the plain green hostas surrounding the little statue are hosta lancifolia. I have a million of them-they line the fence much of the perimeter of the yard. So dependable and always look great, boring, but green, glossy, and a good backdrop. As for the Bishop's weed, yes, I was hesitant to plant it as I had heard it is so aggressive, but when I walk around my neighborhood, one of the plants I ALWAYS admire is the bishop's weed. It looks so refreshing and soft, as it forms a pillow of leaves, and so I just had to have it as a contrast to the dark greens in the yard, despite its reputation. I love it at twilight--it positively glows. I just rip out what I don't want to keep it somewhat contained. Also, it is a good deterrent to my dog--keeps her on other paths in the yard so she doesn't trample the ferns and other plants. :) Thank you all again for looking and commenting. Thanks all! I'm happy to say that the little fella has perked up since receiving some water. Perhaps it was just thirsty after all. Or root damaged and thirsty. In any case, lesson well learnt. Monitor water situation even more carefully esp when they are fruiting, and do not remove stake! In my defense, I had no idea at all it was going to be this big. I thought it would be a nice neat little determinate plant. But no, it's now growing taller than me, definitely indeterminate! Thanks again :)

Karen, You always amaze me with your talent!! So Wish you could get back in the full spirit of things again. It's amazing how you look at things differently after visiting here. You'll love the people here . Everyone happily shares their tips and tricks & helps each other out. ( Something VERY rare on the internet ) Can't wait to see your creations !

Welcome aboard! We love junkers & sounds like you have some great junk to work with!! Might go to library & check an antique book before you turn it into a totem. Some early glass is worth a lot. You was take pics & post them on the "Antiques forum" & they will tell you also. Will be fun to reshape the yards of your new home!! Pics of before & after would be great! Jan
