Norfolk Island Pines - Where to Purchase?

Hello,

I live in South Orange County and I want to purchase a small (6 to 8 inch pot) Norfolk Island Pine. The Plant Dept in SJC has larger ones for $50 which is too expensive.

Can anyone refer me where they are sold? HD doesn't have them.

I can't help you with where to buy one, but the link tells how to I.D. them. Common in the trade is to sell a Cook Island Pine as a Norfolk Island Pine.

The post on Fri, Nov 18, 11 at 9:50 is a good quick I.D.

They're showing up in a lot of stores now for Christmas trees. I've seen them at Whole Foods Market and another health food type store in my area, and you should be able to find them soon, if not now. Lowe's may have them, if HD doesn't. I've seen them in regular grocery stores that sell flowers, too. They get them with the Christmas stuff. I saw some the other day in a Randall's grocery store, but you you might not have that chain where you are. If you have a regular nursery in your area, they probably will have them, too.

I have a 6 foot Norfolk pine with about three inch Trunk diameter, I have been top pruning for the past 3 years so I can still bring it in during the winter months, I will have to start to prune the branches because they are continuing to grow out and are as long as the tree is tall. They have sprouts coming out of the branches forming new branches, the thing looks like a natural umbrella, all the lower branches have fallen off. It is about 20 years old, I'm trying to see if I can get it to produces cones. it tries to produce bubs at the top cutting every few weeks, I just scrape them with my finger nail when I see them.

True norfolk island pine have large spacing between branches and are symmetrical. Their needle like foliage on the branches are also long a narrow. Btw... you can buy them in stores during holidays. They are frequently mixed up but we do have one that is a true Norfork island pine bought at meijer. Another helpful tip is the branches along the main terminal come out growing upward and then may level out or droop. The cook's branches immediately grow outward or downward. N. Island pine are also known for the dark green foliage and less peeking bark as they are not actual pine trees but are tropical. First photo is of our norfolk. It is 4-5years. Sunburns easily in direct sun. Needs high humidity otherwise drooping like this occurs. It recently changed locations due to a move and is not happy. Second photo is foliage. The top foliage is a cook and the second foliage is a norfolk island. I hope this helps.

I would survey plant collections there before deciding these were not present, myself. There are two levels of horticultural diversity, same as here: the general landscape, where you see the same cultivated plants over and over, and collections, where there are vastly more kinds grown. There are a great many kinds of garden plants that surely could be grown in Hawaii, that apparently aren't. For example, possibly only a single species of Magnolia, M. grandiflora is represented. Concern about protecting agricultural crops and home gardens from new weeds and insects, resulting restrictions has alot to do with it, no doubt. I've seen Trematolobelia macrostachys growing wild (and flowering) on Oahu on a prior trip, as well as a few other species I may never have identified. None this time, didn't even visit gardens. Short visit, to take care of some family business.

Around here after hurricane frances, all the tall norfolk pines (I'm talkin 50') are still standing. Minus all their lower limbs. Just trunks with a small pine tree look at the top where the newer growth is still flexible. The problem in my yard is that all the fallen branches wreaked havoc with all the plants in the yard where they fell. Another complaint I have with them is when the cones open up they drop zillions of seeds with hard sharp points that scatter with the wind...everywhere. And the cones themselves are sharp and dangerous. So you all should be thankful they don't take kindly to hard freezes. Enjoy them while they're young and pretty, and if they get taller than the house, get rid of them.

Tammy..50.00 IS expensive. 4' NIP's sold here are 19.99. Decorated, 29.99.

More and more stores are getting NIP's in so like another poster said, keep your eyes opened.

Call stores before driving out, talk to whomever is in charge of garden/house plants. Ask if and when they'll be available, and the cost.

I've been to a few stores looking for a certain type of Christmas Cactus. Most stores haven't even ordered them yet, which is unusual since they're usually on shelves before Thanksgiving.

Tammy, since I posted above, I've seen NIP's in several stores, the small ones, 6" pots, for around $5.99.

Hi guys! Well, I did find NIP's at Walgreens around the corner from my house. $6.00 for a 4-inch pot. I purchased one last year, and it's grown considerably and I still have it. Then I recently purchased another one this year from the same store - this time I separated the several trees and planted them individually. I planted one in the corner of my back yard where it will get shade and hopefully flourish.

The best place to obtain them is ON NORFOLK ISLAND...IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC
i say that because these beautiful trees are best left where they are naturally growing....on the island.
Its much like taking a Christmas Tree out of the forest and subjecting it to what people do with them.....which, of course, ends with their death.

Considering what happens to its eventual future....growing beyond the height of the room they are put into, it would be much better to buy another plant.

So....go have a holiday....sail to the Island and see what you are saving.
