Growing caroline raspberries in the south
Comments (2)I'm in 7B near Charlotte, NC, and I've had mixed results with Caroline. I was optimistic at the end of the first year (2011) because they produced a surprisingly good crop late in the season (mostly in September). Last year, though, they cropped much earlier (July), and the combination of dry weather and insect activity (wasps and yellow jackets) took a real bite out of production. This year, I'm leaving last year's canes standing in the hope that I can get a spring crop while the weather is more favorable. That worked very well for my Heritage plants last year....See MoreBetter raspberry than heritage? Pls recommend
Comments (12)I agree with Mrs G! Three weeks ago the Caroline were blooming and I pruned 6" off the tops to force laterals which are now full of blooms. Caroline replaced Heritage for me years ago for flavor as well as vigor and productivity. Carolines are now over five feet tall. All my primocane raspberries (another favorite is Dinkum),are cut down each winter to have only the 'fall' crop. I thin them in the spring to have only 4 plants per square foot with rows being 2 feet wide. I also thin every few weeks to maximize air circulation and production. My goal is to begin red rasp picking in late July as my 40 blueberries take all the picking time until then. Currently, I use certified org horse manure compost, Ca-25, Sea-90, homemade EM and kelp meal to enhance the berries and clay soil. All my berries are maintained organically in full sun. The best tasting and juiciest Heritage I ever ate were raised at the base of a huge black walnut tree in central IL. It is interesting how sister plants can taste different on various soils and or mulches. If you have a close by walnut tree, experiment with a few of your Heritage. IMO, even a 'dryish' red rasp is better than many other treats....See MoreCaroline Raspberries
Comments (9)Wow- that's an insane yield. I've actually got about the same amount planted (~80' of several types), with far lower yields. I planted 5 Caroline last spring (Rolling River) and got about a dozen berries in late June (they were on the plants when I got them potted from CA). Then, in September I got a light crop from the primocanes. I got a very light crop earlier this summer. Over the last 2 weeks, they've started their fall crop. I get about 6-10 berries every few days. I'd love to be able to describe how many quarts I'm getting, but the most I ever collect is a handful, which I often bring in for the kids to devour. That was the fate of the berries pictured below (though those are Prelude, not Caroline, along with Anne and Prime Jan). But, this has pretty much been the case for all the raspberries I've grown so far. I think it has to do with the weed pressure. I've been much more successful in keeping the weeds down with Triple Crown blackberries, as they come from central clumps and I can mulch the heck out of the rest (they also form an impenetrable canopy). I haven't been able to keep the weeds down without killing the raspberries (doesn't kill all, but I don't get many canes breaking through) and not mulching leads to weed patches with low yields. It's actually crossed my mind to take some out and put in more fruit trees as at least then I can just dump lots of wood chips on the area...I'll probably give it another year and try to find a mulch which works- I read old leaves could be an option. Pine bark fines may also stay loose enough for the berries to break through....See MoreHeritage Raspberry Still Not Ready For Harvest Yet
Comments (14)Raspberries are my favorite fruit. Something about the taste, but yeah i like berries a lot. All berries. i foraged wild red and black raspberries this year, and wild blackberries. Here's a photo of frozen wild blackberries (they turn red when frozen) On top is a Triple Crown from my garden. OK, we seem to be hijacking this thread sorry! Greenhorn, are the raspberries first year? BTW if you like Heritage you should try Caroline, they really are a great replacement for Heritage. Better tasting. You guys in NY have some great fruit developed by NY Universities. Luckily we have MSU here, and they do a decent job too. I'm growing Liberty blueberries developed by MSU. They are working on new tart cherry trees. i can't wait till the trials end and they decide on a cultivar. They went to europe and collected many tart and related cherries for cross breeding. Brought in the Romance series from Canada too. I expect an exceptional tree(s)....See Morejellyman
