Ha ha ha,

Gotcha. You thought this was going to give some of you goose-bumps and others cause you to get you dander up.

Naw.

But, even though I am still waiting for the new sealer to arrive, I did get the power pulled and the Banzai set up for when the whole famdamily get's together this weekend.

I REALLY hope the sealer arrives and I can finish this off! Then it will be take on the Turtle Garden completion!

Wow. That is a mess. You have your work cut out for you. If you were going to use a semi transparent sealer of a different color you would positively have to strip that deck with something much stronger than RAD. If yu are okay with blotchiness (it may not even be too bad if you use a Cabot's decking stain). Back to the prep.. There is so much mold and it is so deeply ingrained you are going to have to let the RAD dwell for about 45 minutes and keep the wood saturated with cleaner the entire time. This will remove a decent portion of the sealer that is on there and make sure the mold spores are gone. Make sure you neutralize/brighten right away while the deck is still wet. Re-rinse. Let dry and apply Cabot's oil based penetrating deckin stain. It is a semi-transparent but it is opaque. Seacoast gray should cover the deck well and make it look pretty sweet.

I ran across this when looking at the wood: "Port-Orford-Cedar is very stable in any application and when exposed to soil, water or weather is considered to be one of the most durable of woods. The unique, strong ginger-like scent, due to a volatile oil, can be overpowering and continued exposure to this aroma is known to cause kidney problems. Dust masks and skin protection are recommended to avoid ingestion or contact with the oil or sawdust." So I think the health issues are similar to other woods, and if it's sealed, there's probably no problem. I've smelled the stuff, though, and the aroma was one of the things I liked, so all sealed up it loses a bit of the allure. We've decided, though, to spring for ipe on the floor of the deck(if we use 1x6 boards, it's a little lower in price than composites we looked at) and use red western cedar (that we can get locally) for the railings and pergola. I know there's issues with the cedar, but once we go ipe on the floor, we're already over-budget and can't do railings unless it's made out of something else. Ane with a 9 foot elevated deck, railings are not optional. We've been in this house for 8 years, and my "walk-out" sliding glass door still has that 9 foot drop and a sloping yard I can't use much unless we get a deck out there, so no more waiting. We have a week's vacation, and a contractor in the family who is willing to fit us in to his schedule this summer. One way or another, that project is at least starting this weekend. We've been planning this thing for so long, I'm a little freaked out about actually starting it. Good luck with your project!

Good points, that we've considered very carefully. We are both very healthy and have good genes on our side. His parents lived well into their 80's (his father worked as a plumber right up until a few months before his death). My mom kept going like the energizer bunny until the day she died. My granparents lived into their 70's and 80's and had a property MUCH larger than this one, with a rental unit on it, that they cared for themselves--grandmother had a huge vegetable garden and did all her own canning and preserving. Actually, when I say this property is larger--you have to understand that what we have now is only 40 X 100, with much of the back yard taken up by a 2 car garage and 2 extra parking places. New place isn't huge--it's only a third of an acre, but it looks big to us! No, I wouldn't want anything much bigger than this, but I definitely don't want another house where you sit in the dining room having dinner and holding a conversation with the next door neighbors in their kitchen (we can and do do that now). I don't imagine we'll die in this house--I expect we'll probably stay there for 15-20 years, then head to a senior citizen apt. building. But it will be a lovely place to enjoy for the next decade or two. And we HAVE to get out of this county--way too expensive to live here on retirement. We also have friends and family in the 'new' area, so won't be totally without resources there. And unfortunately, we have fewer and fewer friends/family where we are now--between folks dying or moving away. Guess that's a sort of morbid consideration, but there it is. As to vacations, we don't travel a lot anymore, and really, this place is going to seem like a vacation home to me--partly because we'll be there parttime to start with, and partly because it's so different from where we are now. When we do travel, it's rarely for more than 4-5 days, so I don't anticipate that being a problem. As to 'that much' home--it's about the size of the one we have now, but more conveniently arranged, easier to care for. There's an added advantage to this home. If, in the future, our health would necessitate having live-in help, we could definitely do it with this house. The basement could very easily be converted to a wonderful apt. for someone (it already has a bedroom, full bath, large family room). Basically it would need a kitchenette, and since I plan to put in a summer kitchen at some point.... We've definitely thought this through. This house is exactly what we've been looking for. And I love that it's in super great condition, and that the materials in it are all super easy to clean (there's tile EVERYwhere--I'll be buying a lot of windex, but it will look great with very little work). And, of course, this is all assuming that we decide to make an offer and that it's accepted.

Against my better judgement, I took off yesterday (6/25) and (almost) finished the sealing of Oscar's Playground. Mrs. No came to my aid about 6:00 when she got home from work, and it was a good thing, as I was one cooked cookie and I can hardly move my hands this morning - I think I have blisters on my blisters!

Oscar has still not seen it, but she will this weekend. Time to get out the old manual and finally learn how to use the video camera, as I want to record her reaction to it all! Then the next project will be to get the 9mm video into some useable form for "the rest of us"!

Can't believe that it took 10 FULL gallons of seal and I/we still have the exterior side and the exterior back to do, but there is no extreme rush (or interest) to get to it. I think our resident bear is a bit upset as he/she can't cut across it any longer, but just seems to stand and stare from a distance. Total surface area, including the side rails I put up = 3,222 sf, according to a neighbor, who understands how to measure this sort of thing better than I can. Suppose you can call me Mr. Can't Add The Change in His Pockets - of which there is none left!

I guess I should not say that it is really completed as there is still a 31" section that is going to be added and the 'entry' to the Turtle Garden. Anyone want to come carry 50 more bags of crush marble?

As my neuro-psychologist put it yesterday - "now what are you going to do?"

My response - 'just look at it and sigh!'
