Termites in pear tree.

My mom has a couple of pear trees, one Bartlet and another asian I think. Her Bartlett tree is always loaded with fruit and this year one of the branches broke during a mild storm. I pruned the branch off for her and noticed a couple of other smaller dead branches farther up. When I cut one of the dead brances I noticed that it was hollow in the middle and what looked like an ant came out briefly before returning back inside the tree branch. I assume that this is some sort of termite.

My mom also has some really old apple trees which over the years have been loosing branches and looking pretty sad. Now I'm thinking that the apple trees must be infested as well. The apple trees are older than I am, probably around 40-50 years old, so I'm guessing they are due to be replaced anyway and I'm not as concerned with losing them. The pear trees are younger though, maybe 25-30 years old and I'd really like to see her save them if possible. Is there anything that can be done to save these trees?

Ants in dead pear and apple branches are not the cause of branch dieback. They are there as opportunistic foragers, eating the dead wood. The branch dieback can be caused by a wide variety of factors, including several diseases, but in this case may simply be old age. Branch breakage of overloaded limbs is another matter, and can be reduced or eliminated by thinning the fruit before it reaches the overload point.

Full-size apple trees on seedling rootstocks are capable of living beyond 40-50 years, but will suffer some branch losses along the way. To reinvigorate an older tree, first remove all of the dead wood, then prune back even living branches to induce the growth of healthy new wood.

So have a crack at it, and try pruning down both the apples and pears to see if you can't stimulate some healthy new growth. It will either work or won't work, and if it doesn't you can consider planting some new trees. I am always a fan of planting a few new fruit trees whether you need them or not. Meanwhile, the ant, termites, or whatever they are, are not the cause but an effect of the dead branches, since they are not interested in healthy, living wood.

Kurt, thats interesting to hear your favorite variety is an obscure one. My favorite is also obscure, its one called Fondante des Moulins-Lille. Along with great taste it is super precocious and reliable. Many great pears were bred a long time ago when they were considered a more desirable fruit than they are today, and many of the best ones got lost in the dustbin of history. Eliot, the Bartletts in the store can sometimes be very good, pears are picked when hard and cured so the early picking does not have the bad effect like with apples. The problem is they are often improperly picked or cured so the quality varies a lot. I would consider getting a different pear just for some variety, but if you only have those three to pick from the Bartlett is the one I would go for. Note that you could get many more varieties if you mail-ordered it. Hman is right about the Comice, that pear is too hard to grow. Re: pollination, I don't know if Superior is self-fertile or not, there seems to be conflicting information on that one. If you had limited room you could plant two pears in one hole so they could pollinate each other. Scott

Clare: Open center, hands down. Your newly-planted trees are already the same height as my pear trees that have been in the ground for 15 years -- and it's not because of the rootstock, it's pruning and training. I would not have purchased and planted trees of this size, since I prefer to begin training well before they achieve that height. Horizontal branches are fine; vigorous central growth is not. Tying the branches down is one technique, branch spreaders is another. To control growth, try pruning in late summer. European pears are often slow to begin bloom and fruiting, but I have found that training to a vase shape and pruning in summer reduces the time required. Pruning comice pear tree and cherry tree.

I have a comice pear tree that is overgrown (probably 12 feet tall). I don't think it has ever been pruned before. There's no main trunk that goes all the way to the top. Instead, the main trunk goes up to around 4' and then as it continues up, it successively branches into 4 "trunks", all pointing vertically. Also, there's another smaller comice pear tree growing out of the ground right next (touching) to the trunk of the original comice pear tree. That sucker(?) is around 7' tall. I don't know how old the original pear tree is (it came with the house), but it bore 6 fruit last year. How do I prune the original comice pear tree such that it is not so tall? What do I do with the smaller pear tree growing right next to it? Do I chop it off at ground level or try to dig it out? The cherry tree (came with the house too) was trained to be an espalier, but then neglected, so that the main trunk and topmost branches shot upwards until it reached about 10'. How do I prune the cherry tree? Can anyone help? Thanks so much!
