Blueberry - Winter Protection

I planted bare root plants this spring - unfortunately, they weren't dormant when I put them in the ground so they had a rough go of it intially. Over the summer, two plants dropped their leaves and spouted new foilage and one stubbornly hung on to its scabby leaves although it does have some new tip growth.

I really want these plants to survive winter in as best shape as possible. While I live in an area that gets snowfall, it's generally not the kind or depth that blankets plants for weeks and weeks. Instead, there are long dry, cold periods. What do experienced blueberry gardeners suggest to protect my precious BBs? I'm thinking a layer of leaves or will that smother them?
