Dracena Turning Brown - From Top Down

Hi there!

This is my first post, so I hope this is in the right place.

I've had large houseplants for over a decade and have no idea what I'm doing. They just keep on growing and looking pretty for me. Until now.

I have been spending some time researching on the internet, and have come to the conclusion I have a Dracena (of some sort). It looks like this:

and this:

(but ours is MUCH fatter and skimpier, and about 6 feet tall).

I tried an experiment about 4 months ago, and started overwatering my plants. Why? Well, obviously I'm crazy or something! Now, 4 months later, the plants near the windows look okay still. But this poor baby which isn't directly near a window but is located towards the center of our condo (I was told they like very low light) suddenly came down with a case of "the browns". Brown spots, brown tips, leaves drying up and falling off. But the strangest thing is it only appears to be happening along the top 1st section of the plant. The rest of the plant still looks fairly healthy and pretty. But the top section has some sort of browning on every single leaf. It's NOT a pretty sight.

I went crazy (again) and started to cut all the leaves just below the brown areas, and now the top section has a bunch of leaves that are smaller than the rest. :o(

What have I done to my pretty plant (I think she's mad at me). Do you think I killed her? Will her top section ever come back green and pretty again? What should I do to correct this problem?!?!? Ack!!!

Thanks for any and all insight.
