Where to get strawberries for fall planting?

Anyone have a recommendation?

I've been rotating beds with my existing plants by saving runners and replanting them but I have a real problem this year with strawberry leaf blight. I'm trying some copper fungicide but thinking of planting new plants.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good source for fall plants? I'd love to get a harvest next year even if I start over this fall.

Jung's in Wisconsin is offering strawberries for fall shipment. I only ordered nursery stock from them a couple of times, but I was really happy with what they sent each order, nice quality, healthy plants. So this might be worth trying.

I have hundreds of plants that you are welcome to if you live near Butler County. I transplanted over 300 plants and didnt even put a dent in the patch. I want to get them out of the veg. garden since they are trying to take over the world.

I dont remember what variety they are.

Good strawberry plants can be found everywhere at reasonable prices. Rhubarb, on the other hand, is rather expensive and often sells out quickly--especially if you want the premium red varieties. I have had a very difficult time getting it established, but then we've had 3 years in a row of extreme weather. Victoria (green)is easier to find and cheaper. Nourse carries the Macdonald strain and a Cawood, I think. They used to offer Tilden. Valentine is often touted as the best red variety but is really expensive and even harder to find this year. Some companies like Starks have their own take of classic reds, while Crimson Red is a reliable standby. This year I ordered Crimson Red from Daisy out of Michigan and Victoria from Simmons in Arkansas. Both also carry good strawberry plants if you're looking to combine shipping. Honestly, the best success I've had has come from local varieties of unknown origin--the same with black raspberries. If you know someone locally with a good, successful strain, try to get some roots from him. Rhubarb does better if it's divided every 5 years or so anyway. I have a strain from my grandmother that is at least 100 years old. It is the best tasting and hardiest of all the many varieties I've tried.

Where can I buy Chandler Strawberry plants for fall planting?

I know this is not best answer but my chandler came from canada in september when I was in zone 8 Georgia. They where ordered in April only time they acept orders they came bearroot just before frooze up there. The truck would deliver to large nursuerys as come south and to pick own farmers was there drop off points if can get to a sourse like this they be perfect plants. I hope everyone is having better luck than I am. I live in thw Ft. smith Ar, Poteau Ok. area, and can not find plants anywhere. Three places said that they would have fall plants Sept. 1 or Sept. 15. I am not getting much up in my garden other than steam, The ground is hot enough to fry an egg. I have two kinds of mustard, swiss chard summer peas and buckwheat up. Something is eating the buckwheat down to about 3/4" above the ground. I saw two Quail run out of the garden a few minutes ago, if they are eating it they can just have it. I was glad to see them. Quail have just about died off in this part of the country. Larry

Rusty, I've linked the OSU Fact Sheet on Planting Strawberries in the Home Garden for you. There should be variety recommendations in the fact sheet as well as best planting times. In the southeastern quarter of the state that is zone 7...and probably zone 7b at that, you can plant strawberry plants in the fall if you can find them. (You may have to order online or from a print catalog to find any for fall planting.) The further north, and especially if in zone 6, the riskier a fall planting of strawberries as they may freeze before they can become very well-established. I'm not saying you can't plant them in NE OK in the fall, but just that you run a greater risk of losing a fall planting to cold weather. However, we are in a La Nina weather pattern which generally means warmer-than-average temperatures this fall and winter so it might be a good year to plant fall strawberries in your area. We have the Ozark Beauty variety, which we planted in late winter last year and they produced very well in late spring and early summer. I just got a fall catalog from Burpee and was surprised to see a strawberry on the cover. They're offering plants for fall planting - not bare-root - and charging $9.95, not counting shipping. These are mostly varieties I've never heard of.

I don't think so.

If you have plants already, just start potting up runners. I've been doing that, just to move some stuff around.

Here in michigan I am having a lot of leaf spot. I have been just removing the bad leaves. but with over 1000 plants its a real chore. Do not buy from burpee, gurney, or places like jung. they are just middle men. Buy from a very dependable grower like NOURSE FARM. Many years ago I bought 100 plants from gurney. They were to be everbearing but I got 3 different june bearing plant types. good luck JOHN

I bought a shipment from Indiana Berry about a month ago. I believe they still have most of their varieties available for fall shipping. Good prices, too.
