Harvestman: You may have a knowledgeable and helpful cooperative extension service where you live, but that is not the case in all locations. In my Northern Virginia County of Fairfax, the extension service concerns itself principally with social programs, and the care and maintenance of the county's decorative plantings. When I first planted fruit trees in 1977, I quickly learned that the county service had no one either able or willing to advise me. I know there are some fruit tree experts at Virginia Tech University, but that is 300 miles away. My solution was to purchase illustrated books on fruit tree diseases and pests from the Michigan State University list, and they have served me well. There can be some differences of opinion on this forum, but if you pick through the advice help is usually there. In this case, the diagnosis of woolly apple aphid was spot-on. The real advantage for the backyard orchardist today is the availability of the internet with its multiple sources of information. Type "woolly apple aphid" into your Google search, and a dozen websites will pop up from universities across the country, with complete descriptions of this pest, its life-cycle, and control methods. If you read all of these, you will know as much as 90% of the local extension agents in the country, most of whom never deal with the problems of backyard fruit growers. The fruit forum serves well to provide the initial guidance for searching the net, as it did in this case. The issue of availability and use of pesticides is much more problematic, due to EPA restrictions and liability concerns that have resulted in withdrawal of many previously common pesticides from the consumer market. Imidan, Thiodan, and Diazinon, among others, have all disappeared from the shelves of the bigbox stores where we used to buy them. Does the American Rose Society have recommendations on rose rosette? I found articles on their website. When contacting the local society, it would appear they believe there are large numbers of herbicide damage being mistaken as rosette, and there is just no way to tell attitude. I was hoping to find someone besides myself, and the local extension to confirm to others that what is present is actually rosette. I thought if there was a rose expert I could recommend to my HOA to consult with maybe they would wake up. I viewed pictures of herbicide damage, and it looks different. The local extension agent knows the difference, and has seen the difference. My fear is others may take the it is just herbicide damage no worries here attitude. Another resident removed diseased bushes, I wanted to cry when I saw it, because I was so happy someone actually paid attention. Anyone know if you can get arrested from taking photos at public places considered private property such as shopping centers?

Where I'm located, the nam doc mai produces the most and best mango's. Pure goodness. The mallika also produces well, but I have not totally figured out when to pic them and I think I'm letting them go a little too long on the tree. The glenn is solid all around and the carrie is decent, unfortunately they both got totally wiped out this year with the cold. The cogshall is good and held up pretty good to the cold, but its still a little guy. The Choc Anon is trying to hold on to a couple of mango's, so we'll see. I'm hoping for the elusive winter season..? I still have not tasted one of them. As for my local factors - I have sandy soil and I do not get much rain until June. Jan - Apr is pretty dry, with May bringing in around 4 inches or so. Even though so far this month its has not rained??? For the late season mango, I think I'm going to go with the Neelum, however I'm still undecided on the early season mango...
