Our friend Konrad has, from time to time graced us with photos of his Evans in fruit. It looks great.
I've been growing one here in my hot zone 6 since about '96, and have given away numerous suckers to friends & coworkers - but, I've pretty well come to the conclusion that it is just not really suited to my growing conditions. While the tree has done OK, fruiting is minimal here, and it's so late-maturing that the fruits are heavily damaged and deformed by insects - unlike Montmorency, which excels in my orchard.
From my experience, Evans/Bali really seems to be in its element in zones 5 and colder - and some warmer areas of z5 might even be too warm for it to compete favorably with the more common tart/pie cherries.

We had around minus 49 F - 45Celsius one night last winter out in the country and most
flowerbuds got damaged, therefore hardly any fruits this year.
I'm still eating the odd one's here and there, actually, I'm glad for a one year break.
I don't see a moth, last picture with flower I see a bumble bee.

I'm glad Lucky, you liked the pictures, you're right, they do better in colder climate,.. but not minus 49 F.

Wow. That looks great.
I think there probably just aren't enough chill hours here for Evans to crop like that, and its cherries ripen a full month later than Montmorency here, giving the bugs a better shot at them.

Konrad--I'll post a better picture. Didn't realize the one I posted of the blossoms was so terrible. Haven't quite figured the bit about posting pictures out yet, but below is a link to a better picture. The moth is actually dead center in the photo in the original post. The honeybees were out when the trees were blooming, but I also had a lot of bumblebees and a lot of smaller, wild bees of a number of different varieties visiting the flowers on the different fruit trees, plus these moths in droves in the evenings.

I don't grow honey bees, though the beekeeper that covers this area has a set of hives about a mile and a quarter south of me. I grow leaf cutter bees, however. They are of no use in pollinating fruit trees because they don't start to hatch naturally until mid to late June, and raising them we set the hatch to start no earlier than the 21st of June. They really don't move below 70-75 degrees and it takes consistent weather in the 80's before the leaf cutters really go to work. We use them for pollinating alfalfa for seed.

The Evans really seems to be a productive tree for its size, which makes it much easier to net to keep the birds away, and so far despite being loaded with fruit every year it hasn't gone into a biennial fruiting habit like apples do. Our other cherries tend to be rather hit and miss--some years are loaded, others aren't, and you face the risk of a hard frost during bloom.

Where can I get one? I was thinking about getting Utah Giant or Black Gold (I have just bought Kristin and Sweet September), but this sounds like it's quite versitile and productive too. Who has them in the U.S.?

I'm not expert in moths, perhaps posting it in the butterfly forum?
I think your climate zone 4 is a perfect climate for this Evans cherry, my zone 3 is too cold, [for the country side] so far, as I look back, perhaps one out of 5 year is good.
I have another tree here in town where I live, [warmer] and this tree looks good, fairly full of cherries.

Too bad the Evans isn't as reliable for you. My reliability experience is limited to only a few years, but in that same period our Early Richmond cherries have been up and down quite a bit, so this reliability is nice.

I have relatives in northern Sask. that planted an Evans a couple years ago that they either got from DNA gardens or the U of Sask., but it hasn't produced for them yet.

I almost bought one this year from a nursery, now after seeing your pictures I wish I would have.

The main reason I didnt buy it was because it is a sour cherry, the nusery said they were pretty sweet if you let them hang for awhile. Does anyone have opinion on there taste for fresh eating?

Does anyone know if Evans will pollinate a sweet cherry? I have Kristin, but I need a pollinator.

A sour cherry can not pollinate a sweet cherry.

I know of a Dutch Man, he just love to eat these cherries, he wouldn't want to touch sweet cherries with a long stick.
Actually, they are a very healthy cherry, high in antioxidant.
YES, let them hang on as long as you can, I find, when they turn red and you put bird netting over, you can eat from it for at least a month, they get sweeter too.

Evans are self pollinating.
