Rhubard suddenly died, never grew back.

About 2 months ago (Sept) my rhubard's leaves turned brown then all of them just died. We haven't had a frost and don't usually get one till Dec. here in CA.

I have watered like normal but there has been no new growth. These were huge old plants that I have had for over 10 years. They have been thriving and producing tons of rhubarb for years.

What do you think killed it? Could it be crown rot? Any hope of it coming back? If I dig it up and get rid of it, could I plant some new plants in the same area? Or is there a chance they would die too from some unknown disease?

Thanks.

Clare
