A Screen Door and Old Tools

One side of our house was really boring...all vinyl siding and windows. So I took an old screen door with cool, old, red paint and made a trellis. I attached chicken wire and put rebar in the base to get it up off the ground. The door came from my brother who does lawn maintenance...a customer was throwing it out!!!! I planted a clematis on it, and it's starting to really grow this year!.

Then I placed some old, garage sale find tools on the same wall with some found barbed wire. I think it makes it more interesting than the old bare wall! ENJOY! Bear Hugs! Kirk

Definitely added a LOT of interest to that wall. I love the screen door's detail, it's really pretty.

Thanks everyone! Jeanne - I would LOVE some of the curly willow! That would look spectacular on the door. I've seen a couple of those trees here and they are GAWJUS! HAHAHA Do you know what they call that tree here? 'Tortured' willow. Isn't that awful? Karen/Jules/June - In a way I can't wait for warmer weather though I know that means my little ponds will need daily top-ups of water. We don't really get many 100+ days here, and at night it is extremely rare for it to stay warm. We sleep with the comforter on almost the entire year. Even the week after the fires it went cold and we were wearing our winter coats! We have crazy weather here. yup, Vickie, I have great neighhbors on both sides of me. That's a blessing for sure! HAHAHA!! June, the floating plants are called Azolla. It's a fern that floats on the water. Spreads very quickly and I'm already scooping it up and adding it to the compost heap.

It wasn't too long ago someone posted a pic of a screen door they put in between the property lines of their home and her daughter/son's home and the grandchildren just love that they have to "open the door" and step through to Grandma's place. It was so darling, painted a lovely color blue with a chair or planter next to it. In the search box at the top of home forum page, type in "screen doors" and I'm sure that msg will come up and several others for you to check out. Not a screen door, but I recently found a glass storm door and decorated it as shown. I think something like this using your screen door, placed on your front lawn and then decorated for fall/halloween would look simply darling. You could do a fall wreath in the middle with some mums, other fall flowers, some pumpkins, cornstalks, etc. surrounding the bottom of it. Sal

I am thankful for any and all suggestions! I appreciate all views. The new door is an insulated steel door by Waudena, out of Wisconsin. I do open the casements windows on either side of the front window, but if the door is open I can see my Purple Martin colony and part of the garden from the kitchen. I live in North Dakota with -20 to -40 temps common in the winter, howling winds, banking snow, and all sorts of lovely weather. A storm door is a necessary evil. Still, in the brief but bright summer, I'd love to have a "view."

Thanks. My fabricator has screwed up many times on my quartzite. The island is on crooked. He had to redo the perimeter countertop because he only measured for length. He also had seams that were 1/2" wide when I had told him no seams at all, and 1/4"-3/4" gaps along the back wall. I had two matched slabs set aside, so instead of using the 2nd slab to recut the perimeter counter, he found a cheaper slab that was a different color and had a different texture. He sees nothing wrong with the slab being different. When I asked him last week about fixing the hole where they cut the drywall, he said, "We always adjust the fit that way." He has been in business a long time. He is not going to fix the hole. I never have water there, but my husband has his coffee pot there, so a spill is possible. I just need to figure out how to fix the hole on the inside of the bathroom wall before we install drywall. I know I can caulk it on the kitchen side. Pet screens...I have never heard of that. We live lakefront, so we get tiny bugs that can get through the fiberglass screens. If they are non-metal, do you know what they are made of, or which brand of windows/screens you have? Maybe I can find them. I don't know of any surplus stores, but maybe some have opened in the last few years. We have spent a lot of money on things you can't see in this remodel...beams, complete rewiring of electrical and plumbing, 2 heat/ac units, new stairs, roofs, gutted the great room and kitchen, etc. We also had new siding installed on the house, and turned a huge upstairs room into 2 bedrooms, a bunk room, and a sitting room. Now, we are about out of money, and we have 3.5 baths to remodel, new carpet for bedrooms, and need to refinish a 1400 sf hardwood oak floor. I am good at budgeting, but the $35,000.00 ceiling beam was just one repair that took a chunk out of our budget. Rather important beam so the roof wouldn't collapse!

Your screen door is great, I have been searching for a screen to use as an entrance to my garden. Yours would be perfect,now where do you live? LOL.

Robolady, I would be honored to have you post it on your webpage. I'm always looking at your page for ideas! You have the best ideas!!!! So creative! Grannytoo, I use vinyl clips to attach things to the siding...although I have been known to add a screw now and then (with sealant around it) if I want soemthing to really stay. SHHHHHHHHHHH! Don't tell my wife. Hee hee. Cindee and Breakdishes, I am considering eventually moving the door to an entrance of one of my gardens...perhaps on a new rustic arbor I plan to make this summer. Want to find some cool rustic hinges. So, Cindee and Breakdishes, you could come "visit" my door when it's hung. LOL Kirk

That is just great. I saw someone adding wire to a screen door frame on tv last week, and I thought, well shoot. That is just 5 piece of wood, and I have used wood. I might make myself one of those, lol.

That's too funny! I got an old screen door free from a junk pile at a yard sale and did the same thing! My clematis is growing up it. When it's in bloom, I'll take a picture and post it.
