My Treasures From Last Weekend

Just wanted to share my finds from last weekend. I scared my wife with how many "treasures" I brought home! Hee hee!

We live in the country but the nearby, small town of Deer Park, Washington, had several, community garage sales over the weekend. I bought this toolbox for $1. (What a steal!!!) Thought I would put clay pots in it with colorful, summer flowers. Should I paint it? I bought the yellow, deep, enamel pan for $5 and plan on making a potting bench, inserting this pan in the top of the bench as the potting pan. I have the plans for the potting bench. Have been looking for the perfect bowl! I found it!

I bought this old, student desk for $6, thinking I would put it on our covered, front porch and place plants on it. Our 6 year old daughter loves it and is using it constantly on our porch. When I saw her doing her homework on it tonight, I thought maybe I would bag the plant idea and let her use it on the porch or in her room!

This stool was $5. I want to use it in my garden shed when I work at my worktable. It swivels! The large and small funnels were in a free box! Any ideas? I'm sure I will figure out something for them! I want to strip the paint from this table and put tongue oil on it and place it to on our covered, front porch with a plant on it. (Or my wife may win out, and we'll put it in the house as a plant stand! She deserves some reward for allowing me to bring home all of this stuff! Ha!)

Finally, many of you know that recently my brother passed away unexpectedly at age 51 from diabetes. He was a true collector! This weekend, my other brother went through my late brother's garage and gave me these things: a cool, ice cream, counter stool and a very intricate, wood table...both of which will go on our covered, side porch. The top of the stool is weathered but would make a nice side table. The table is too cool to describe! A real treasure!

Oh please let your daughter have the student desk PLEASE WITH SUGER ON TOP......
I would make some small planters out of the two small funnels and plant some chicks and hen in them. You did good this pass weekend

Very Nice photos, and North Wind Moe is my favorite. No wonder you chose North Wind Moe to buy. I agree that Japanese Maples don't have the invasive roots of others, but the canopy will expand fairly rapidly for a small tree. I love mine, and wouldn't be without them. kay

Davidandkasie~ I am SO sorry for your loss... Trust me, I feel your & your kid's pain! I can't believe ppl! I know it would kill me to knock on someone's door & tell them I just hit their pet, but I would do it b/c that's the right thing to do! I can't believe how some ppl are so careless about other ppl's feelings. That was something I was/am thankful for (if it's possible to be thankful in a time like this)... that I didn't have to go search for my dog and that I found him... I can't imagine not being able to find a pet & not knowing what happened to it, having that tiny bit of hope that it would one day return. I was also glad I could be there w/ him when he took his last breath. That had to be difficult telling your kids about it... I'm glad I didn't have to worry about that (no kids yet). I'm so sorry for them, b/c I'm sure the little one doesn't completely understand about death and it's probably really confusing that one minute he's there, then the next he's gone... and the older one, I know how he feels, Coffey had became my constant companion and slept in the bed w/ me every night when my fiance was gone & was there every morning when I woke up and was constantly at my feet following me around, so, I understand, it's hard to lose something that had always been there. I guess that saying is true: "You never really realize what you've got until it's gone." Good luck dealing w/ this! *RIP Hooch* ----------------------------------------------------------- Ninapearl~ Thank you for your condolences, and yes, my Dad is something else! I know that I can't ever replace Coffey, he was definitly one of a kind. Bailey & I do still miss Coffey very much, but I can see improvement in each of us. It will just take time. And, although eventually I will probably want to get another "little brother or sister" for Bailey, I just feel like it's too soon overall. I'm afraid Bailey might not adapt well since it's only been 1 1/2 weeks since Coffey's death and I'm afraid that I might expect too much out of a new dog, so I just feel like now isn't the time. I will know when the time is right. Also, my fiance & I & Bailey will be moving soon and I honestly don't know if I would have the time to train a puppy right now. I have, however, thought about going to a shelter for a puppy. This has made me angry though, looking @ PetFinder.com... We had a special puppy that was WANTED and in a good and loving home and he had to be taken from us, same goes for Davidandkasie, and then, there are all of these dogs out there that are neglected or abused and just plain UNWANTED and just sitting there. It is so unfair how the world works! (Not that I am wishing death on any animal, but it just doesn't seem right how that works out.) Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now. Hi Barb, I have many antiques and the best thing to do is leave on the original stain and finish, unless the item is damaged. This wash stand and the antique chess table, that I posted a few months back, are the only pieces I restored. The chess table had severe water damage and cigarette burns. This wash stand was very dark and murky and it just didn't fit in with our other stuff. That's why I painted it. Then I decided to strip it (using a sander) and refinishing it to better match our bedroom. I can tell you how to refinish and restore furniture, however, I rather not give advise on antiques... I'll leave that to the professionals. I'd be happy to tell you how to finish other furniture though, as we build a lot of furniture and I do most of the finishing. I never use gel stains, because they are not penetrating and compromise the beauty of the wood. I rather sand a piece down to the raw wood and start over. Joann. Check out the antique forum on GW.

Nice finds! I love that tool box. In a recent country mag they had such a toolbox with exactly your idea, plants & flowers and it was set on a dining room table. It looked gorgeous. No don't paint it, it's perfect just as it is. If your little sweetie is doing her homework on that school bench then definitely let her have it.

So sorry to hear of your brother passing away Kirk. I would like to express my deepest condolences to you and his family.

Depending on her room, are you going to paint it bright colors?

Nice scores Kirk!! The tool box is awesome, and just a buck!! Sheesh! I agree with the others. Leave it as it is. The old blue paint on it looks very cool. I'm glad your clever daughter claimed the desk. We had one very similar when I was a kid, and yes, I did use it for homework! I'm glad you got some treasures that belonged to your Brother. I lost a Brother to liver cancer last Summer and truly appreciate everything that reminds me of him. There is no such thing as "sharing too much" around here, Kirk! Bring it on!! Kathy

Great finds - the tool box is my favorite. I would leave it as is. And be sure to post pictures of your potting bench when you get it made - it sounds awesome!

I have an 'icecream stool' like the one in the top photo
(I only get red Xs for the rest of the pictures) but mine
has never had a seat. I put a 24" piece of glass on it and used it as a table for years. Now it holds a large rounded clay pot.
I do see the photo of your daughter...glad she is enjoying the desk!

Great finds,love that tool box,keep it as it,the pots of flowers sounds like a good idea. And that's a great enamal ware pan,also sounds like a good idea for that. And if your daughter loves the desk,then it was a great buy,and let her have it. Kids love those.

OOOPS! I deleted the other pictures from Photobucket after I posted them. What was I thinking?!!! I obviously wasn't thinking! HA! I was cleaning up my Photobucket account. Ok, the votes are tallied and there isn't a hanging chad in the group...Do not paint the tool box! I can picture the contrast with some very bright flowers in it. (Reminds me of the picture that got away: We had a very old, almost falling down farm house in town. The elderly owner kept the most incredible flower box on one of the side windows. The juxtapostion was amazing. I always thought...next year I'm going over and take pictures, but his children ended up taking him to their home and the house was torn down.)

Kirk, I am so sorry for your loss. I seem to remember that you planted something in his honor - or am I mistaken?

Ha! The toolbox remains the color it is! I was hoping people would say that. The paint tells a story, and as my posts show, I like rustic. Can't wait to post the up-close photo. It's really cool! Yes, Nancy. I planted 51 daffodils in the fall in my brother's honor. When they bloomed this spring, I was constantly reminded of my big brother. Thanks for asking. Kirk

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. That's so young.

If you don't want to use the funnel as a funnel (I think metal ones are best) I think I'd save it to make a tinman like from the wizard of Oz. I can see one of those with his hand up in the air in your garden.

I agree don't paint the tool bos. What a cutie she is I know she will enjoy the desk. I bought one at a ys a couple years ago and my GD absolutely love it she has claimed it from the start. I am sorry to hear aboute your brother. I lost both of my brothers one in 2000 and one in 2004. Sure miss them.

I got the same desk on freecycle. I guess I'll use it for plants...not sure yet. (My guys are a tad to big to take it over!)

Oh Kirk! you don't know about Freecycle?!?! It is a junker's best friend! Google Freecycle and you can find a chapter in your area. On the site you post things that you want to give away. Others will reply if they want them or vice versa...you can reply if you see something that you want. It is a great way to keep stuff out of the land fill. It just goes to show that one person's trash really is another person's treasure!

I got some of my best junk from Freecycle: 2 bowling balls, the satellite dish for my gazebo, lots of glass for totems and lately 40 blue bottles! It's great that others will come and take away my junk. They must feel the same way about me!

I love the tool box, desk and enamel pan...but that's because I LOVE Prims :)

I have an old toolbox with the name of one of the local hardware stores on it that has since closed up! I bought it for like $5 at an antique store and it sits on my kitchen counter and holds blue Mason jars that I use for canisters!

The enamel pan would be a lot more than $5 around here. The yellow and green stuff is more expensive because it's harder to find! I LOVE collecting that stuff. I have a good collection of red and white pans and some other stuff.

I also have an old desk but it's the old kind where the guy in front of you has the desk attached to his bench. I bought that this winter and it is my endtable in the corner.

I just love old stuff! I can't imagine putting it in the dump!

Freecycle it nice....if it works for you. I have yet to get anything but I did get rid of about 6 things last week :)

Awesome scores!!! Luv it all!!! And your idea of a potting bench!! wow! Everytime you look at those things of your brother's, you'll think of him, so I'm glad you'll "use" them in an everyday way!!! I can only speak for myself but it is a pleasure to have a male version of us garden junkers hanging out here now!!! Men really do care like we do!! Even my Hubby is starting to come around!!!

I always call Freecycle Ebay for misers! You have to "wade" through a lot of junk, and sometimes you get disappointed when something you really want goes to someone else, but then the big score hits! I furnished our beach house with freecycle stuff. Occasional Craigslist, too. Just got a neat nightstand (we'll use it as an end table) for $25 (perfect condition) and I asked if they were getting rid of the futon, too. (4 young college girls shared an apt.) She said sure...just take it! Free!!! And we were looking for one for the beach (we end up with kids sleeping everywhere!)
Oh, but I've gone so very OT!
