? about planting mattress springs

We have springs from an old mattress that DH was going to haul to the dump, but I saw a project in it. On one side the springs have a cone shape to them. I picture hens and chicks planted in them and/or other succulents. I figured I would use Spaghum moss and then once they have had time to take hold I would stand the springs up so I have a wall of whatever I plant. I'm not sure though if I don't need something sturdier than the moss to use for planting medium, like maybe putting in cocoa mat first since the springs aren't that close together. Of course I'm wanting to do this as cheaply as I can, but I also want to do it right.

Any thoughts?
