Anyone in zone 8A w/suggestions?

I need help with filling in the bare areas. I thought of hearts and flowers, but they took over the last place I planted them. I am looking for something that stays green year round...it can bloom, or not. I have hens and chicks in one of the tipsy pots and thyme in the other. I also have thyme planted in a few places in the planter.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Not only are the frogs cute, the whole vignette is delightful. I really like how you've set it up. I'm in zone 9 so nothing to advise on plants from here, I am not good with them anyway.

glib, Thank you for the response. I also found a previous posting regarding cardoons by you with great info. I think I got caught up in my artichoke research and with both plants being in the same family, forgot to treat the cardoons as cardoons. The time line and blanching tip helps a ton. Seems I am a little late, but I think I may still try along with the artichokes and hope for the best.

Thank you stefan, I found Louis XIV and it says blooms in flushes. The color variation in the photos at helpmefind is interesting- mostly a dark purply red, but 2 of them show a more true red. (Pagan, good luck to you- hope you got the rose you wanted). Anyway, I put in a request at Ashdown for them to start a Fields of the Woods for me. I have never ordered from them before but like that they are in SC- if it does well there, it ought to do well here. I might even try to get down there sometime to see their gardens... Thanks so much Dave. (I was beginning to think I smelled funny since no one responded! Maybe I didn't choose my title wisely. ???) You are right. That picture shows exactly what I don't want. I've been reading this forum, taking notes, and googling the trees in my notes. Instead of becoming more knowledgeable, I think I'm just more confused than ever! (Emerald Green Arborvitae, aka Smaragd, is the same as Emerald Green Thuja ... right? or wrong?) I like to decide what I'm going to use in advance because I know I'll get distracted at the nursery. Need advice for a 'hay mulch garden' (zone 8a)

It may depend on what the hay is from. Up here in the northern part of the state the pinestraw and hay (wheat/rye/oat) can be found at any home improvement store and not uncommon to find both at roadside stands out of the back of a trailer. Both run about $3.50 a bale and I can tell you it does add up so the longer it lasts, the less often you have to buy it and it's also time consuming to install it. The hay is used most often for seedling lawns which is something that might not be that common in south ga. You can harvest your own pinestraw pretty easily. It's best from the longleaf pines though. Using hay might return a little nitrogen, giving you some fertilizer value then again there was a topic in this forum not long ago that discussed the downsides of using grass clippings as mulch and I can't remember all of them but heat build-up was one of them. As for controlling weeds, you can simply use a pre-emergent in your planting beds or I've discovered if you get the hay about 6 months before you actually need it and let it sit outside, the seeds wont be as viable later down the road. In fact I've got a leftover bale sitting out in the yard that was left over from a lawn project in the fall and the hay seeds germinated and growing quite vigorously all around the bale. So I go and cut it periodically and stuff the new hay in with the bale. It's like having my own little hay factory. As for plants, someone else would know more about the perrenials than I although I don't see why your choice of mulch makes it different than other gardens in terms of what to grow. It may be helpful to know what the sun and soil conditions are if you didn't already mention it.

Very lovely garden area. I'm in Zone 5 but would like to suggest "Silver Mounds" are a nice plant, another nice one is "Lemon Grass." I really don't know if they bloom all year round as in the cold winters here they do die down.

I'm zone 8a but in Virginia. However I grew up out west and am familiar with the climate.

How about a beach theme? Shells, sand, beach rocks Drift wood.Old bottles and.... Or woodland look with groundcovers and logs with little creatures peeking out here and there. I could have fun with this!

Hi Vicki,

Since you already have thyme, how about adding lavender, rosemary, oregano, and sage? They are perennials, provide wonderful fragrance and textures and you can also cook with them! They also all have about the same requirements for growing. =0)

Lantana is a blooming perennial I love in sunny areas, but it does die in the winter. You could maybe go with some low bushes that don't die like fringeflower, it has great purple leaves and fusha flowers in spring and fall (i think). I have mostly shade so I'm trying to think sun here. I have some. Artemisia is a nice silvery plant that does not die back, but it need trimming or it becomes leggy. It's also known as wormwood, it smells great but is poisonious.

I would go with all succulents if I were you just b/c those containers can sometimes be hard to keep watered well. I simply love Delosperma Ice Plant as it is hard to kill and doesn't spread too aggressively and it would grow low to the ground so that your pretties would still shine through. :) Maybe you could also try different sedums - there are so many different colors available now.
