Recycled Bottles and Cans

yep you guessed it...got more blue bottles. I never knew there were so many. I have some more Sky, 6 blue nuns (which are almost turquoise) 6 that have a cat on label, 1 AZ Tea 1 odd one and 2 very thin and tall tequilla bottles.

I am sorting some to take to my mother this summer out of my stash and I need another blue bottle tree, lol.

I just might have to go ahead and start collecting some myself. Every time I see some at a yard sale or thrift store I think of ya'll!! Very pretty :)

From what I understand, aluminum is endlessly recyclable. Plastic can only be recycled a few times, and I don't believe it can ever be recycled into food grade plastic again. Also, the plastic label cannot be recycled. Shipping-wise, plastic is lighter, but aluminum uses more available space. They are both round, but plastic bottles are wasting space at the top where they dome in, as well as the space taken up by the stackable plastic shipping pieces. I don't know which allows for more fuel efficiency: less empty space resulting in more liquid shipped per truckload, or lighter containers resulting in less fuel needed for propulsion. I can't think of many ways to reuse aluminum cans, and can only think of a few for the plastic bottles. Any uses for either will last a long time, which means you won't be doing much in the reuse section of the 3 R's.

We are average I would say - recycling, lights off, CFLs etc. I have friends thought that put me to shame. More than a few of our friends don't use toilet paper. They use family cloth, which is cut up squares of flannel that they wash. I can't bring myself to do that. Lots of friends also use washable sanitary napkins and I personally love my menstrual cup (did I share too much? lol). Bumble I agree that these small things we do in our homes really make a negligible difference in the broad scope. However, it does keep our environment top of mind and that in and of itself is a reason to keep doing it.

I helped my father make wine during my entire youth. He had upwards of 1000 ginger ale bottles (still have over 500 with wine in them dating back to the 70's), and I helped him cap many of them using a simple hand press with beer caps that were lined with cork. I just opened a bottle of 93 vintage today, and it tastes beyond belief good. He never added sulfites to his wine, just pure grapes, fermented in a wood barrel for a year then bottled the next year. So, an occasional bottle would go bad, and it would land up in the vinegar barrel for some of the best vinegar to be had. So, old fashion cork beer bottle tops, if they can still be purchased, seems to be a good choice. Actually, the cork I took off this bottle was cork lined and said Lemon Lime Soda on its top. Who knows where he got these corks things from. Oh, he stored all the bottles in a cellar, just standing up. Of course, there was build up on the bottom of each bottle that was not drinkable. One just carefully poured from the storing bottle, into the serving bottle to not get any of the stuff which had built up over the years at the bottom of the bottle.

Where did you get your Arizona tea bottle....I email that company and they said they had discontinued those blue glass bottles.

I'm so sad...I just can't find blue bottles anymore.

I've been told there is a bottled water that is in a blue bottle...I really hope I can find out what it is called.

I'm waiting to grow my blue bottle tree.

I am not really starting a collection and looking for particular ones. I recycle the cans and bottles every 5-6 weeks (made $30 today) and once I asked the young man if he ever gets blue bottles. He said sure. I told him I would be interesting in some of them and told him why. He walked to the back and gave me two. I said how much do I owe you. He said nothing. I said well can I buy you a soda. He said no I have water but I would love to have a green apple. We have to take paper to the grocery store in the same shopping center and get the money so each time I bring him green apples, grapes and today I threw in a cut fruit bowl. He is so nice and his boss does not care that he saves them for me. Today one of the bottles happens to be an Arizona Tea, blue bottle. Do know know where the person bought it, but recycled in So. CA. Last time I got blue beer bottles, lol.

I got my first blue water bottles at World Market. Check at the back of the inport stores near you to see if they have any water, maybe even Pier One or some of the Bed and Bath shoppes. I kinda got hooked on the carbonated mineral water. Was good. But why buy when I can get for almost free. Some have ended up in my DD kitchen for vases. Right now they are full of roses and Iris.

They can be bought online which is cheaper than getting them and drinking the insdie. Just search for 'homemade wine bottles' and you will see them in different sizes and colors.

Beautiful stash! I always enjoy reading your postings to see what creative things you're up to! Love the sweet story behind the bottles! It could be a "Chicken Soup for the Soul" story. You touched my heart. My wife is making wind chimes with blue wine bottles we saved from our anniversary trip to British Columbia. I'm saving blue bottles for a bottle tree. Thanks for inspiring me! pattico: I buy a mineral water that comes in a bue bottle. It is called Blu Italy. It is my favorite mineral water and costs about $1.25 or so per bottle at Trader Joes which is a store that is I believe a west coast thing

Collecting interesting bottles should be a snap for me -- with the University and several smaller colleges within blocks, we have many students and bars in the area. Tuesday nights are a busy time for the curb shoppers (a weekly event for my neighbor Sonja and me) and the bottle/can collectors are always out in full force. If I can't get to the bottles first, well, I'll just pay a bike-ridin', bag-totin' fellow shopper for them. I'd like to make a bottle windchime for my garden. Gotta go find a bottle cutter and some corks..................
