About my black rasberries

I have these wild black raspberries growing along my fence. I'm not sure what to do with them. Can I freeze them?

Also, what can I do to get more canes? Can I just let seed drop and hope they spread? Will the ones I have keep coming back year after year? This is the second year for them.

I'd just eat them out of hand. That's what I did as a kid in N IL. You need more growth. Right now they have too much competition. The canes that grow this yr will fruit next yr. More growth will give you more canes to bear the following yr. They will spread by themselves if given good growing conditions. At least that's how I remember things from long ago.

If you let some of the longer canes touch the ground they will root themselves and form new plants. I love my black raspberry patch. The first year it was just a few scraggly short canes that I bought for about 5 bucks....the following few seasons it grew into a nice bush giving me a few handfuls of berries each year...last year it finally settled in and exploded with growth and I had enough berries for the kids to have about 1 and 1/2 cups for breakfast and the same amount to freeze(and some for me to snack on in the garden) just about every other day for the first 2 weeks of July. I ended up with enough frozen berries to make a batch of jam in the Fall when it cooled down.
This year I am going to even have to prune back more than just the dead canes because it is getting out of hand, but I love those berries so I dont mind so much :-)

I would also love to have some info on this - i am addicted to raspberries, but am a poor student living in a basement suite ;) I'm able to use the outdoors - but am keeping everything in pots as the landlord uses the garden and I'd like to be able to take my plants with me when I move. My additions to this Q would be that if a small/medium bush would grow alright in a pot: how big should the pot be, and what type of fertilization should be used? If its any use, I'm in Victoria (Canada) about zone 7a... I'm thinking of a thornless type, but do they have any differnt/odd requirements?

Heritage and other primocane (current season growth) bearers are OK to buy in pots, but it's a waste of money unless you are in a big hurry. I have sometimes planted local nursery sourced Heritage this way when it's too late to order BR's from a better source. My customers tend to not be very used to waiting for something they desire. You can plant a potted plant in June and get berries in the late summer into fall. Heritage doesn't seem to have much trouble with virus related disease so I don't know how important source is as long as plants are vigorous. Of course if you are also planting summer bearing types you would want to be sure all your plants are "clean". A healthy raspberry in a pot will have no trouble growing into soil and establishing into productive plants, in my experience, and I often throw some of my surplus into pots in case some customer wants some later or I don't have time to plant them in the spring at someone's site. Please disregard anything that I suggested about Caroline because my experience with it was at a problem site where nothing did well until I solved the problem. If you want sweet raspberries it is often helpful if canes are adequately thinned to about 6 to 9" apart. Excessive shading will reduce sugar whether it's caused by clouds, trees or other canes. There's bound to be some regional influence here, depending on how strong the sun is. It's been very rainy here but my Heritage summer crop has had better than usual quality because they rely on rain for all their water. Water is crucial to quality and quantity as well. Lots or rain is helpful right up to the week they start to ripen- then you hope it stops. A soaker hose or water delivered without wetting the fruit and nearby leaves will increase consistancy of yealds and quality considerably in the long term.

Rasberry jam question

Over the summer I made jams with raspberries and my husband is picky about seeds too. I used the food mill strianer thing- the kind that is like a bowl with a crank (I am horrible with official names). But anyways, I bought it at Meijers last summer. It had 3 different screens for the bottom. I heated the berries, dumped them in and cranked it using the smallest screen. It got about 95% of the seeds out. Raspberries were in short supply for us this year, so I added some other fruit to them. A left over peach, a few strawberries, and some blueberries- making 4 fruit jam. I didn't think about it for a while until last month when hubby and I were home sick I found a few jars in the back of the cupboard- wow. It was amazing! Well, anyways- good luck with the jam. Yes, you can freeze berries for a few months. We had an ave. crop of 17 pints and eat everyone fresh. I prune my first year canes starting in mid May to about 15 to 24 inches or a low as I can reach into the crowns, so some of those are longer... This gives me twice as many second year canes for fruiting the next year. On some of my Jewel first year canes even give me fruit. I have never tried to plant raspberries any from seed. But I think the birds planted a few this way for me. Over time my raspberries established very health crowns. They spread from the tips of first year canes that bent over into the ground. I start many by cutting the tips with the lawn mower. I sometimes clean out my second year canes after fruiting in Sept. or in early April the next year. Buy yourself a nice pair of leather gloves.
