Question on philodendrons

I have a question about the nonvining types of philodendrons (Moonlight, Autumn, etc). After a while they seem to develop a sort of unattractive 'trunk' as the lower leaves drop - it also leaves the plant a bit wobbly as the top leaves are heavy.

Can I just bury the trunk when I repot it? Should I try to stake the plants? should I try to air layer it and then when roots form cut it off?

Just wondering what the best long term management strategy is for philodendrons like this. Thanks!
