ID'ing a bug

Over the past three weeks, I've lost five of my Christmas Cacti, and I'm worried about my last one. Cause of death for all is the same: Some kind of fast, gray bug in the soil, chowing down on the roots -- plants go from healthy to dead in a day or two. I've saved some cuttings, so I hope to save something (but no flowers this year, I expect :( ).

Like I said, though, I'm worried that these critters may have gotten into my last cactus as well, and terrified that they may be in the rest of my plants by now. Can anyone take an educated guess as to what they might be, and how I could deal with them?

(I'd post a picture, but my cheapo camera can't get any detail on small objects, and besides, they're REALLY fast -- they duck back under the soil faster than I'd be able to focus a camera on them.)
