OH, OH, OH, what a nice hubby, excellent find, I love it. I want it.. Why can't my hubby find stuff like that? Does your hubbs give lessions on finding good stuff?? My hubbs needs to take some.

Dan, I'm going to offer you just a couple of thoughts to consider before you proceed too far along on your project :-) Planning a bog garden in an area that is naturally very dry (as under the canopy of Norway maples most often tends to be) seems to be counterproductive. One of the more widely held tenets of successful landscape design is to select plantings that are suited to the situation (the "right plant, right place" philosophy), rather than attempting to significantly alter the situation to accommodate specific plantings. Might there not be a more appropriate location for a bog garden, say like where drainage is poor and the ground stays moist after rains? Also the planting area seems rather confined to accommodate two more trees and two rather large growing shrubs in addition to 'drifts' of herbaceous perennials. Not to mention your proposal of a bog area that will take up a third of the space. Do some research to see exactly how large these structural plants will eventually become and then enlarge the bed accordingly. Or reduce the size or quantity of the proposed plantings. And finally I'd suggest you do some research on dry shade. Planting under the canopy of Norway maples poses some significant challenges as both the rain-diverting spread of the canopies and a very aggressive root system tends to rob the surrounding soil of any available moisture and most of the necessary nutrients. Many plants, including a good many that you plan to include, find this a very inhospitable growing situation. I don't intend for this to entirely dampen your plans but only to suggest that there are more successful ways to approach this than simply asking us to provide a plan to place what on the surface seems to be a less than well researched or thought out selection of plants/uses for this particular area.

I thought basketball or a plant in a round pot (two wire baskets with the linings attached together) Any trailing vine would look great. And maybe some stand up flowers in the top of it. Maybe a saucer for bird feed. Good find.

Dump cake - dump dinners!?!

I realize this is an old thread, and at the risk of ruining my (new) reputation, I can't resist telling the word, under my assumed name, that in a moment of weakness and nostalgia and totally out of character, I did indeed order the dump cake book "which included a "free" dump dinner book, and a "free" ceramic frying pan. Laugh all you want . The truth of the matter is that the book is really kinda fun. My daughter used to make a couple of the dump cakes when she was first married in the early 80's, so I'm going to surprise her & her husband this coming Sat nite when they come for a leg of lamb dinner & serve a dump cake for dessert! What's that rumbling??? Oh, I know, it is several of you shuddering. Most of the time, our families "eat healthy", (including my 100 year old father!) but Saturday night we will sink into decadence, The cherries actually sound good after the lamb, peas, etc and I know they will get a kick out of it. You know, the book had several tempting versions of the dump cake, and over the years I will probably enjoy using some of them. The dump dinner cookbook was actually just a 39 page paperback, and haven't perused it yet, but would think the advantage of a dump dinner as opposed to a crockpot dinner is going to be not having to plan as far ahead. Sorry this is so late & so long; I just couldn't resist since no one (but me :) ) seems to have actually ordered it! I probably would not do it again, as the scottish side of me is horrified that I spent $27 on a whim, for a questionable cookbook, with "free stuff" which of course you are pretty much paying for in the 7.99 shipping, and probably inflated price of the cookbook. I hope they can stop laughing long enough Sat nite to eat & enjoy the decadent, quirky expensive cake.

You are so lucky, my husband would have left it. But I will be going to the dump from now on with him!!!! I love metal in my yard too.

You have got to be kidding me! I can't believe that was at the dump! I've been looking for a small piece of metal like that (fencing, gate, whatever) to use as a trellis, but they are very expensive. It's hard to believe someone threw that away!

This appears to be the corner of a back yard gazebo. They are great.

Ohhhh, I can see a "corner garden" ... a glass birdbath totem & some mushrooms on the ground surrounded by climbing morning glories or a mandarin honeysuckle or clematis or roses or.....

Thanks for all of the great ideas! My DH said that he didn't see the other pieces anywhere or he would have dove into the dumpster...he's a real trooper when it comes to junking!

Jeanne....I'm seeing your suggestion in my yard for sure....if the weather would just cooperate a little more, I'd be dragging that bad boy out to the yard today. ;-)

Last year the wind destroyed the canopy of our sun shade and I used the metals supports as trellises. Two panels per corner gave me a total of eight and the DH wired them into sets of four. I got some lovely roses for my birthday to grow up one set and a trumpet vine to grow up the other.
