Barndoor for somebody's garden!

Here's a barndoor I finished today for the Farmer's Market coming up in late spring. Just sanded down some of the old chipped finish and re-painted. My DH cut out the center frame for me and then I added the birdhouse decor we made out of a piece of old barnwood...break it off at the bottom...this one was already a broken piece, drill press a hole, add some vines. TaDah! Can't you just see some potted plants sitting in front of it in someone's gardens! Jeanne S.

Well my dh is the compulsive one of the 2 of us.He goes out early in the morning b4 i even get up and hits up home depot and lowes.I got up saturday morning and on the front porch were 3 hydrangeas,a crepe myrtle,2 rudebeckias,and a couple others and he was no where to be found.When he came back i said,where are you gonna put those??I don't know says he,but i'll find a place.If he had asked me ,i could have saved him some money especially on the hydrangeas,as i already had 2 small ones i am growing in what i call" my infirmary. Unlike him,i like to start things from seeds and cuttings,he doesn't have the patients for that!!Good for me though,so i'm not complaining,but i do think it is an addiction!!! LOL Kathi

I appreciate your comments ... thanks! The basket is purchased and I am always ont he lookout for wire baskets to use on barn doors...they are too expensive to buy these knock-offs. I don't think I could make them out of fencing myself...but it is a good idea! Old hinges always add alot to the doors...very rustic looking, which I like. I will post a pic of the white coneflowers when they bloom...I don't have real good luck with them...but love purple coneflowers, as you sherril. This door I posted before...made it for my DD ...used a freezer basket and added corkscrew willow and mum ...this pic shows it at her farmhouse. Jeanne S.

Karen, I constantly add to my "soil" - which is otherwise pure, white sand. I add a lot of partially composted material (trying to give moisture someplace to sit), early in the growing season I add some chemical fertilizer (I prefer organic but the Miracle Grow does give a boost), I add as much fully composted manure as I can afford. It's a neverending process. The thing is, this sand just seems to devour any organic material I add. Gradually - like, within a year - there is no trace of it! I've been told that if I continue to add LARGE quantities of organic stuff I can get ahead of it and transform the sand into a rich growing medium. Our vegetable garden (where we have added many trailer loads of stuff) is quite productive. The other thing is that drainage is extremely good. It is so good, in fact, that I wonder whether the plants have time to grab nutrients or moisture as they go by. It is hard for me to believe that much in the way of nutrients remains in this "ash tray sand" after watering or a (far too rare) rain. But I sure don't worry about root rot!! BTW, last fall we had a well drilled. We discovered that we have over 90 feet of this sand under us. Then you hit a thin layer of white clay and then granite. What a place to grow flowers! LOL

I will be starting my tomato seeds inside in about a week. I use a card table in a southern window. I have to be careful because Zackey, my cat, ate some of the leaves a few years ago. They are poisonous to kitties. I have more tomato seed varieties than I have a place to grow them. Love it! I picked up a white gate curbside, and it just looks blah. I think you've made up my mind to paint it barn red, and hang something interesting on it. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have an old barn door...but it is attached to my house. I made Denny leave it there so the barn wouldn't loose it's barn look. I have the hinges and all and wanted them put back on...but now he can't get up on a ladder...so I doubt I'll ever get them put back.

No way I'd ever get on a ladder that high.

Simple but very cool! I like the understated touch of the birdhouse. Beautiful job!

Thanks, garden junkers! I love all the ideas you share on this site. I always hate seeing an old barn or farm building get bulldozed down and just "burned." So I love using these doors and barnwood for so many projects.

My DH & I do a couple craft shows a year and last summer we did a couple Farmers' Markets. FM's are always wonderful- a cool place to shop & get produce, plants & lots of ideas. So this barn door will go there as we plan on trying a couple again this summer. Think Spring! Jeanne S.
