Watering & Moisture Meters

Here in Eastern PA the last rain to speak of was June 9 (24 days) and no forecasted rain in the near future. I have 1st season apples and nectarines in my small orchard. I bought a cheaper Rapitest moisture meter with a probe and have been attempting to monitor the need for watering. I know the soil on one side of my orchard is heavier (ie. clay) than the other and the meter seems to indicate this by showing need for water in some areas and no need in others. How accurate do you think this meter is? How do others monitor the need for water? I need to monitor or I will over-water and "rot the roots out" with my OCD tendencies... I've been using the 5 gal bucket trick once or twice a week but I'd like to get a little more scientific about it with out spending scientific "moola".
