Red Grape Problem

What is this? How do I get rid of it for next season? This appears on most of the clusters. This is the 3rd year and it's putting out a nice amount of clusters (20) after heavy thinning, but now I have this. This was the only vine I got at a big box store. I haven't seen the red fruit yet, but I'm assuming because of the red veins. There is a green vine next to it under the same environment and it does not show any sign of this. Thanks

It is called Black rot of grapes.
Search it on Google,because it is too much to tell about it.

Now that you have Herman's attention, ask him for recommendations of grape varieties that are more resistant to black rot. He has been at this for a while, and you might as well take advantage of his experience in a climate nearly identical to yours.

Kiwinut, I have noticed Swenson Red can get downy, but it is more resistant than the vinafera grapes and is not much worse than other hybrids. Overall it has been an easy grower. It didn't fool my birds in spite of the light color - they got most of my crop last year. I'm bagging all my grapes in paper sacks this year when they start to ripen, I had too many losses last year. I don't know exactly what ones I am going to toss (well, topwork) this spring but its looking like Beta (got for its disease-resistance, but its too sour for anything but jam), Worden (like Concord; already eaten plenty of those in my life), Steuben (good and highly disease-resistant but not good enough), one of my two NY Muscats (super slipskin aspect makes it a jam grape only in my mind), Edelweiss (great vigorous disease-resistant grower but too much like Concord in flavor for me), Interlaken (I prefer Canadice in spades over this seedless grape which is more in the slipskin Edelweiss camp), Sangiovese (wine grape I have only one vine of which is not supposed to be very consistent in my climate), Syrah (ditto), Chambourcin (wine grape not tannic enough for me but otherwise very good). As you can see I am starting to realize the slipskin grapes are not something I am personally going to be able to use a lot of. They are great for jam but I expect I will just keep a NY Muscat for jam since they have the most flavor. My kids have zero interest in eating any slipskin grape fresh. Scott

Yep its powdery mildew. You will need to cut them off and I am sorry but you are done for this year. I agree with Yuman at the first sign of the stuff you have got to spray. Mine don't get the mildew tell monsoon or some times not at all, but by then the grapes are done. Another thing to try to prevent this is get rid of some of your vines/leaves. I learned that from a winery in So.Cal. let the wind blow thru and sun shine thru (keeping the leaves dry)give those vines a hair cut. Plus this means all the good stuff will go to the grapes. I know they look great but those non producing vines just suck up the water. Look at pictures of vinyards and you will know what I am talking about. Grapes love heat as long as they are getting enough water at the base(only) I am sorry to say but my ruby reds did great this year and I know yours will do better next year. Campv

I grow grapes (muscadines) here in south Florida on factory made steel trellis that are powder coated against the weather. Down here wood (even PT) and galvanized steel aren't an option due to rust and rot... so much water here :-) Up in New York my Dad used powder coated steel fence posts made for wire fences but used stainless wire strung between the posts. I don't think in the 20+ odd years I was visiting there he had a rust or support problem.

Not sure what your disease is, but you might not have pruned it enough. It doesn't look like it's getting much air in there, so grounds for breeding moisture born diseases. All the old clusters should have been removed and the canes cut back to 4 or 5 nodes a hand apart. New grapes will grow on the canes that come from the nodes after the vine goes dormant in winter. Inside each node is a new cane and a few clusters. It's a fantastic process. Don't be afraid to prune a vine hard. You tube has lots of videos on Pruning Grapevines for latices. Just do a search. It will be OK, but you will have a tangled mess if you don't prune aggressively. Prune too much and you won't have fruit! It's a balance. Good luck to you!

Thanks guys, I thought it was brown rot. I will search to find out what causes this. I was hoping I didn't have to remove it. I tried a few local varieties cause I wanted to plant that spring. But on my 2nd and 3rd orders, I selected some that Herman had been talking about so I hope they do well. All 6 of my vines are different so I could figure out which work well for me. Then I can have healthy grapes all over the garden. Herman, I would like you to share your experience with seedless grapes if you have. If I replace this vine, I would like a seedless red. Thanks much!!!

Goodground:Here,in my Backyard i had black rot this year too.But,different grapes fight differently,this worse deasese of grapes.
Most resistant here in my Backyard:Mars(seedless blue).
Best tasting,second best deasese resistant:Jupiter Seedless.
Don:I am sure you can grow this too in Va,using two sprays,one before and one after,flowering.(Bordeaux mixture).Peace on Earth,say no to war.

How bad has black rot been for you this season compared to other years?
What percentage were bad grapes?
I'm trying to decide if I should replace this particular vine.
Either way, I will be adding Jupiter to my garden next spring.

Not Bad,a lot less than other years,due to low precipitation,to date.
I had about 10 cluster affected on Niagara,one on Steuben,one on Jupiter,and one on Canadice.Mars,Sheridan,Cayuga,Alwood and Concord,were free of Black rot.Other years were a lot worse especially,on Steuben,Concord,Niagara,Cayuga,Canadice.
Now you got to understand,this are selection of most resistant grape vine possible.
I discarded about 30 varieties.

Boy would I like to take cuttings from your garden. If this year has been mild for black rot, I will remove my red vine cause it already lost more than 75% of the fruit (and still going).

The white vine I bought at a local nursery has only had a few bad grapes (didn't damage any clusters) so it's a keeper. Sweet grapes, not sure which variety.

Mars and Jupiter has to be bought from Nursery,because i Signed a contract of non distribution.They are patent pending.Peace

The patent on Mars was filed on July 5, 1984, and issued on March 4, 1986. It expired on July 5, 2004 (20 years from filing date), so there should be no restrictions on propagation. Jupiter is still under patent protection, and will be until January 11, 2019.
