That's a tough one... you could disguise the trash cans with a lattice panel or something and maybe put a bench in front of that? Any chance you have a photo?

nutmeg22: If you can post a photo, I am sure you will get many ideas. I would love to offer you ideas, but without seeing a photo of the actual area, and possibly a wide angle shot, not sure what to offer you to be able to do something without cash and without outside help.

I have a park like backyard that had no dimension. I had to create it, and would love to give you ideas. Hope you can post a photo.

Yes pictures please. I'm thinking ... hang a door on the fence like it goes off into some secret garden...or an arbor at the point that you want to change or hide the view.
You could also make some other paths leading off the main one and divide your gardens into sections..maybe themed gardens.

You could put lattice up around the trash and grow vines on it. Put a piece of yard art (bought or made) at the end of the path. Put a bench at the end and small shrubs or plants along the sides of the path. Make the end of the path a special feature for your yard and the path will look like it was put in for that reason.

Here are a couple of thoughts:

Take 1 privacy panel bought or salvaged and mount it across the walkway at the point where the unpleasant area starts. Use wooden posts (hard work to sink!) on either end or those tall metal stakes used w/ wire fencing (cheap and easier to sink!) and wire the panel to these.

In front of this panel, add a bench or a table and a couple of chairs and maybe a few plants in pots. Or build or buy a potting bench and position it in front of the panel and add a chair and a few plants in pots.

The idea is to create a focus for the walkway and a destination. Yet you will hide the uglies and still leave room to walk around the panel to whatever you decide to hide behind it.

I did something similar to this in my yard. Backed my potting bench w/ a couple of privacy fence panels to hide the "utility are" behind it.

I would put up a mirror,perhaps mirrors in a french door or other gate like facade.HIDE those garbage cans! Make it a magical focal point.
The other choice is sod over it albeit costly and lumpy.In Florida our grass grows right over concrete and stepping stones so fast we lose them!Most of our garden junk too!

You can make a straight path appear crooked. Ever so often put in a half circle of stones or bricks, first on one side and then the other. Experiment with different sizes. When you put plants at the edge, it will appear to meander a bit. Lay them out and look at a day or two to see if you need to make it closer or further apart. I think if you put a pot opposite the curve, it will make it appear more curvy. Then you can trade it out from time to time to see which look you like the best. Maybe a birdbath opposite a curve, or a statue or a bench. I think a gate at the end will give it a destination. Put a sign on it saying something like "over the hills and thru the woods to Grandmas house we go". LOL. Any sign will be great. Put vines on the outside of the gate.
