Pictures in Garden Jumk

I have been reading GardenWeb forums and love to see the pictures you all post here. I also have been to some of the other forums where many posters consider it criminal to post pictures. I cannot imagine garden junk without the photos and wondered how you deal with it here. Friends or foe?

The Green House is very simple to build, if you have some simple construction knowledge and tools. I will give you some basic ideas on how I did it. First of all, I build two. One with PVC pipe and the other one with Wire Cattle Panels. The PVC Pipe one goes like this. It is 12 by 18. It can be larger, next year plans are in the work for a 12 by 40+. I experience alot of wind, so I made it stronger than needed. First I made a 12 x 18 box out of 1 x 6. Then I dug 4 holes in the corners for a 2.5 foot 4 x 4 post. Then screwed the box to the posts. Then cut 1.5 inch PVC pipe cut 6 inches long every 4 feet on each side. Next take a 1 inch pvc pipe that is 20 feet long and bend it into a hoop. I stress buying 20 foot lengths. I tried to glue 2 tens together and it was just a pain. Two people are nice, but one person can do it. Drill two holes through the pipe and 1.5 inch pipe and attach the hoops to the box with long screws. Optional part, I ran a 3/4 inch pipe down the middle and bolted it to the hoops. It made it very rigid. On the ends is the tricky part. They can be done many ways. I framed up a couple rectangles and mounted some old storm windows that I picked up for free. Then made the door out of a scrap piece of chipboard. Prior to attaching the doors and window, the plastic needs to go one. I used a 6 mil piece that was 20 by 25. It was not fancy greenhouse plastic, just the stuff in a hardware store. 6 mil is the best, I wouldn't go for 4 mil, waste of time. I attached one side of the plastic to the outside of the box with staples. Then sandwiched it on to the side of the box with a 1 by 4. The boards ran the whole length of the building. Pull the plastic over the hoops and pull it tight too, then sandwiched it. Then pull the ends around and wrap them through the window rectangles and sandwiched the windows on and put 1x4 sandwiched on the bottom. I attached two short ropes over the outside of the plastic and attached to the sides of the box, this stopped the "Balloon Affect". Watch the temps, it can get very hot in the sun. One day it was 45 outside and windy. It was 90 plus at 10:00 in the morning. If the plastic rips, fix it with clear duct tape or clear packing tape. Attach it to both sides, if you can. I had a rip in a 45 mile wind storm. I was able to tape it back togther and it held great! The smaller one is the same process. Made a box, set posts, bend cattle panels over, attach to the box (on the inside), put black pipe insulation over the ends of the panels to avoid ripping the plastic, cover with plastic, sandwich the sides, finish the ends and enjoy. A high tunnel can be made very easily. Google "High Tunnel" and you will find out some really good info. These two little building have survived alot. Two tornadoes, 4 hailstorms, 2 weeks fo 30+ mph wind, 5 inches of rain (in 1.5 hours), 50-65 mph winds. I think they are the greatest things ever!

Thanks, Olga. I use you and Harry as a guide to what grows well in our area. Your Excellenze von Schub makes me a little nervous. I have one that is about 4 years old and it is 1/2 the size of your. Hopefully, it won't catch up or everyone else will have to run for cover. Keep the pics coming, please!

Thank you :) 4th from last orchid is Iwanagara Appleblossom - easy to grow, likes high light and is very fragrant. I bought it years ago as a seedling from SunBulb (bagged seedlings you find at Lowes or Home Depot) Other orchids in the pictures: 1. Group shot: a hybrid phal - P. Rong Guan Amah - with Blptm. Midnight blue 'Cardinal's Roost' and a broken spike of Cymbidium Sunshine Falls 'Butterball' 2. Cattleya bowringiana var. coerulea , Brazilian species, from a nursery in Brazil (export) 3. Are we done with the gang mentality? I guess I should have put a smiley face after my comment to botann :) ... Admittedly, a mischievous sense of humour did not translate in that post. My point being that I am aware bamboo doesn't grow "in" water and was struck (again) by how some regular members assume most non-regular posters are novice beginners. But since some took the time to formally announce that I will henceforth be ignored, let me ask the following. Why is anyone who is perceived as challenging or disrupting the "regulars" (even on only one or two occasions) immediately labelled a troll or accused of being "fueled by totally opposite considerations"? I have made dozens of posts on this and other forums because of a genuine shared interest I have in those subjects matters. I have on occasion agreed with the oft-expressed opinion that there is a sense of exclusivity among certain regular posters on this forum, and yet this single post is cited as evidence by George and Ink of an enemy in your midst. Actually my goal is more on promoting Japanese Gardens, and encouraging that interest in others - which is why I suggested Flickr to "adopted". It is inspirational to look through the photos on that site. My original post was nothing but complimentary, supportive and encouraging. That said, I do happen to believe that all should be welcome, that this is not the place for a private social club and I believe I am entitled to that opinion. Isn't this is a public space were people of all stages of interest share information? I don't think it's solely a place were a handful of regular posters should have private debates intended for their own amusement. That leads to the gang mentality witnessed above, whereupon internet cliques form and occasional posters, lurkers or "drop-ins" are made to feel like unwelcome outsiders. Just because someone is not a member of the frequent posters club, why under-estimate their knowledge level? Maybe if all queries are answered as though the posters experience is similar to yours, and not 'talked down' to or ignored, it will be a more enjoyable and educational forum for all. So if some of you have hopes of driving me (like others before me) off the forum, so be it. The fact that you attempt to do this, only speaks to the kind of power/control issues at work here (I disagreed with Inkognito on one single occasion, and he now vocally labels me a troublemaker - fragile ego indeed). No single group owns this forum. Anyone is entitled to visit and occasionally I will post - usually in a supportive and encouraging role. I have learned from some of you, and will continue to do so. However, I promise not to ask any more questions of botann for fear I will get another introductory lesson on the rudimentary basics of bamboo. But as I said, it was a very nice pic. He (or she) has got a lovely garden.

I'm glad none of those people seem to be on this site!lol
the more pictures, the better....we FEED on pictures..lol
heck, I even switched from dial up to DSL JUST so I could view pictuers faster...

so, post as many pictures as you want...cause we NEVER get tired of seeing someone else's stuff!

Us junkers are visual... give us lots of pictures. That's why I quit going to some of the other message boards. This is the nicest group of people in the cyber world!!!

AMEN!!!! I don't post to much myself but LOVE looking! I have received soooo much inspiration from this site the short month that I have been on it. I can see how ya'll just bounce off each other! LOVE THE PICS!!!

Why wouldn't someone like pictures? Maybe they don't want someone to copy their idea? I think thats just silly. I love to share ideas and with out pictures how to we get opinions from all the other junkers...

M_wench makes a good point about not posting photos of others.

I don't worry much about my photos, I don't think they could make much money off the quality of photos I post. I would prefer that I'm asked if somebody were going to use one, though.

The other thing about photos is, too many photos in a post or a thread make it impossible for those on dial-up to ever get them to load. There are still lots of folks who don't have DSL, or Cable, or Satellite and we quickly forget about them. A single photo with a link makes it much easier when there are lots to show.

It's all junk, found objects, not an ordinary rock anymore, scrap mosaics.
