Curtain rod trellis, ?

I have several plain, white, metal curtain rods. Those where one end slides into the other & that you can buy for $5 at Wal-Mart. I thought maybe I could use them as a trellis for tomatoe & pepper plants in pots.

You would pull them apart, stick the straight ends into the soil & join the curved ends above the pot. I'm thinking about using twine to crisscross from one rod to the other for added support for the plants.

Would they be strong enough to hold up the plants?

Should I use wire, rather than twine, to crisscross from rod to rod?

Does this junking idea sound half-way feasible or am I jumpin' over board with just junk?

Thanks for any & all suggestions.
