Curbside Find

The neighbors were throwing away a huge half whiskey barrel yesterday. DH is the one who saw it, about 5 minutes before the garbage truck showed up. He asked, we got it. It now sits in my back yard awaiting planting. I had just bought some persian shield, blue torenia, chartreuse coleus, and now I need some lamium to complete the scene.

That was a great find! We are always curbside shopping. Get some great pieces that way. Post a picture when you have your barrel filled up.

Kale gets a little big so you might use some of the 10 or 12 inch pots for them. Zinnias would look nice. Basil, thyme, oregano, parsley all great for many of these pots. Don't forget some peppers, maybe an eggplant. Lots of options to try. Let the seeding season begin:) Great find, enjoy and Happy Growing David

Brave girl! It's such fun curb shopping...but I always feel as if somebody is peeking to see what weirdo stops to pick up what the owners think is junk. We don't see many curb goodies around here, but when we do, it's WOO HOO all the way! A friend gave me a brightly-painted wooden high chair last year with a plant in it. I just planted it up for this season and LOVE IT! Have fun with yours!

Lots of stuff, but one thing that comes to mind is an old garden gate. I had seen some in magazines and wanted one...the kind with the hooped wire insert and curlique gate topper. I priced one at an antique architecture place for $88 and one for $55 at the flea market. Was driving down a road and saw one leaning against a patio table in someone's yard, and I was thinking..."Lucky dogs. They got a gate just like the one I want." A week or so later, I was driving past the same place...and it was SITTING OUT WITH THE TRASH ON THE CURB!!!!! What can I say? Some people have no taste. I stopped and loaded it in my car before you could say "Don't." I find a lot of stuff in dumpsters too. This was in the dumpster behind the thrift shop. It's a McCoy vase...perfect condition.

I have 2 days off and I am hoping to get this done while I am off. A friend at church has some passion vines and is giving me one. I think I am going to build a cane reed teepee in the center for the passion vine. The barrel is really big and it will need something to give it a lot of height. Any suggestions for something trailing that likes the morning sun and afternoon shade.

I can't wait to plant it. I am getting my passion vine tomorrow. And I will pick up my soil then to. I have lots of aged horse manure to mix in and everything should have plenty of root room. I will post pics as soon as it fills in nicely. We are having problems with PB which we can't seem to get resolved so we have to find another photo storage site to use.

Oh yes, please post a pic after it's planted. I found one of those wooden barrels last year and still don't know what I'm going to do with it. Would love to see your's before I do mine. Thanks.
