You know what they say about the size of a man's Elephant Ears...

This started as a small houseplant around 2003 when I was in Southern California (my ex wanted to toss it, but I kept it.) Because I know very little about plants, I took pictures to Home Depot - the guy said it looks like an Elephant Ear plant. I have kept it indoors for the last 11 years. Problem is, while the leaves seem normal...it is the STEM that is kinda thin and cannot hold the weight of the rest of the plant. Can I cut the stem (just below the bottommost ears) and plant that in the pot? If not, what is the best solution to replace the sticks, and strings holding it up? Many thanks!!
