Loni, I wouldn't doubt if the impatient was the source of this insect..(mainly if grown indoors)
They're pretty plants, but best used as outdoor annuals..still ppl grow inside w/o problems, but impatiens are mite magnets.
Answer the questions Mr. Sub posted..this will help ID the insect.
I hope you find out what type of bug your plant/s have, since they're so destructive and can kill THE plant and neighboring plants.
When did you first notice them? Do they linger on leaves, soil, or entire plant?
Most bugs leave hints what they are.
Since the heading of your post is spidermites, is this the bug u suspect living on your plants? After mites eat off leaves/stems, etc, leaves turn a mottled yellow. They pale. Some ppl mistake this as a mineral deficiency, when it fact it's caused by mites.
Mites come in various colors. They're tiny..depending on vision, those w/bad eyes may not see mites. When mites increase, they build fine webbing on stems/leaves.
One way to find out if your plant has mites is by placing a white sheet of paper under several parts of plant..tap leaves while holding paper under parts your tapping. You'll see tiny tiny dots on the paper..These speckles are spider mites. Check plants..Toni

Mr. Sub - the bugs are small, not exactly round, maybe a bit longer than circley. I don't think they fly, I haven't seen any webbing and yes, they are mainly in the center of the leaf, next to the main vain, just like you said. Most tend to be underside but I have found some ontop the leaf also. What is your verdict?

I just found one of my plants with the same type of bugs, really small and they crawl, but no webbing, and no "adult" mealy bugs (I am not sure how small babies are) I would love to know to what they are!

Just a note, I sprayed mine with safers too, I was left with little black spotty things, that wipe off,like a speck of dirt, Loni, did yours leave anything behind after you sprayed?

They don't sound like spider mites to me: spider mites would leave webbing and wouldn't be on the top of the leaf. Whitefly or fungus gnats would fly, so that's probably out too. Scale wouldn't crawl around fast. That doesn't leave much: I think we're down to aphids or mealybugs.

I think I know what you're talking about, because I think I've got them too, but I'm not sure what they are. I've been thinking they were mealybugs that just weren't old enough to get all fluffy and cottony yet. (According to some sources on-line, male mealybugs aren't fluffy but do fly, which I hadn't heard this before. It may or may not be true. The idea of some kind of Mealybug Boystown happening on my cacti disturbs me, somehow.)

Whatever they are, the basic strategy winds up being pretty much the same. Rubbing alcohol, sprayed on or rubbed on with a Q-tip, will poison some and weaken others. Spraying with water will dislodge some. I don't know Safers personally, but some kind of over-the-counter pesticide should also help.

If it makes you feel any better, I think I've gotten these off of some of my plants (Sansevieria, Euphorbia, some cacti) before. Others, I've been fighting since November (also cacti) and they still haven't gone away. So it can be done, but you may have a bit of a fight.

I have seen aphids, that isn't what they are, I just washed if a million aphids from my outside peppers, they were gross. These are much smaller, almost like fungus gnat larvae above the soil on the plant.....same thing here, no fluffy white stuff. Just minuscule little white crawly things. weird.

I forgot to mention these bugs are black in color. Does that help? I've been looking on GW for an ID. Many people say their bugs :) are white: spidermites. I don't know if MY bugs are spidermites or not.... just wanted to clarify that.

Thrips, maybe?

Whatever they are, isolate the plant or plants you have seen them on and spray everything with Safers. Repeat as per the directions on the Safer bottle.

I bought this horrible "organic" soil from Miracle Gro this summer and it was FULL of bugs, including mites that looked like big spider mites. Mostly they stayed in the soil, though. I repotted everything and watered a few times with soapy water, that did the trick. But for bugs on the plant itself, Safers should take care of it, just make sure you spray everywhere, up, down, under, over, and around the leaves, the stems - give it a thorough drenching! I gave some to my mom to get rid of those orange aphids and a week later she was complaining that it didn't work. I understood why when i went to her house and watched her treat the plant - she gave it 2 or 3 general spritzes and thought that was enough! I could use as much as a quarter of the bottle for one treatment.

Also, if possible, take the plant to the sink if you have one of those hand held spray nozzles and give it a good once over, helping to knock any critters right off the plant and down the drain.
