My First Bowling Ball - What do you think??

I made my first bowling ball. Here are a couple of Pictures. The first is from the top so you can see it up closer. The second is on the stand it will be on in the garden. What do you think? Should I grout it? I'm undecided. The bowling ball underneath is painted white, so the Aqua blue shows up great, and I really like the way the light reflects off it now. Will the Grout change that?

That BB looks great. I love the stand it's on. I don't grout my BBs and they've done great in the weather.

I'd leave it as it is.

The Lemon seedlings are doing wonderful! They're growing very fast. They did fine after I uncovered them. I think this was partially thanks to the fact that I mist all of my plants 4-5 times a day. I fear they'd burn without it, but they love the sun. About a week ago, I did have to give the wandering jew a haircut. You can't even tell now. I started another pot. I couldn't stand to throw away all of those stems. The bigger spider also has a few new shoots. All of the plants are sending off runners. Too many to deal with! Linda, along with the daily misting, I add a tiny bit of water to the soil. Although it's quick draining soil, I never let it dry. With the heat in the 100's, I have to water every day, so I don't know what it's like in your zone. Thanks for all of the kind words!

Welcome Beecharmer2! This is such a fun forum with the nicest of people! If you look on the GardenJunk homepage, you'll see "FAQ" at the top of the page. It tells how to make some of the cool projects you see on the forum. There's one for marbles on bowling balls...same idea as pennies. I'll post the link below. I haven't grouted mine but I bet someone else will speak to that. This was my first bowling ball. So easy and FUN! When you do a bowling ball, have a container you can sit it in. I used an old heavy pan. The GEII is a silicone sealant. I found mine in the glue department at Lowe's. Have fun! Post a picture if you create a Bowling Ball masterpiece!!! What do you use as a bowling ball stand?

I've gotten several stands at Thrift shops(TS is short for thrift shops in case you see it) ones I get I use to hold pots so they don't tip over but perfect for bb. they are simply 2 wrought iron rings 1 larger than the other with about 4 short pieces of wrought iron holding them apart about 6-8in. high. so I just use them either right side up or upside down- smaller ring on top would be just right for BB. I don't know if they were meant to hold plants or something else. Could be kids metal shop project. Most are sprayed black but I've redid some green or clay color. They are heavy & last forever. Jan

Not bad for $3.99! You got yourself a really healthy shiny young plant - it will be doing really well for you for some time - and you have time to research the needs of it - so it will be with you and blooming for as long as you want. It has a potential to be twice its size - and carry 3 times more blossoms.

Thanks everyone- I think I have decided not to grout, because I kind of like it the way it is too. I can't wait until spring comes, so I can put it outside and see what the sun hitting it looks like. Is there a recommended spray I should coat it with for weather protection that won't dull the look? Or is it ok to leave it alone?

It's very pretty. I do not grout or coat my bb's with marbles. They have held up great.

I would leave it alone...it is very pretty just the way it is. Since you painted the ball white, you shouldn't have to worry about it fading from the sun. I don't spray anything on my BBs unless it has only been painted, then I put several coats of poly on it.

I love your first BB! That color is fantastic! Where did you get the marbles? I think our Hobby Lobby may be discontinuing the marbles there. They have hardly any left, and very few colors :( Michaels has some great colors, but the bags are small, and expensive. I love your stand too! I'm glad you decided not to grout!

Is that a bowling ball balancing on the top of the sculpture? And if it is, how have you treated it to make it look so interesting? And, is it glued in place?

But, nice placement of the elements.

All three elements are drilled and pined with 3/8" rebar. The finish(?) on the bb is a portland cement slurry.

countrygrl - I got my gems at a store called Dollar Tree. I'm not sure if they have those in IL, but if they do check them out.. They have shelve's full of them, all different sizes, colors and shapes. At $1.00 per pound bag I can't complain.. It only took 5 bags for my project.
