My latest project-whadda ya think of it?

I've been wanting to dig into my glass stash and play but have been a little low on ideas. I made a lot of bells for Christmas gifts and don't currently have room for another plant stand in the house or topiary in the yard. Since,according to my daughter, I am a "bird nerd" I thought I'd try making a bird feeder.

I used a small 3 section relish dish, a ginger jar shaped piece of glass I rescued from a lamp and a glass cabinet knob. I thought I'd make a small feeder for the wee ones, chickadees and such. I've filled it with black oil sunflower seed and am hoping that the birdies will take to it.

Ken, you must have read Diane Keaton's book. I have it on audio version, she reads the book herself. That's the second time you've mentioned "it ain't pretty" which is why I think you may be familiar with it. (thong was the first).....hehehehehhe Well, I'm glad you said it, because my eyes were bugging out. I thought maybe the hosta chosen were all miniature or smalls. TNC, you have been saved from a terrible heart attack when your hosta explode in the spring two years from now. Ask me how I know. :) So welcome to the forum. Ken is serious about taking a 10 foot string and drawing an arc in that corner. The hosta you have will end up making your dogwood disappear except for the limbs up top. Or almost. Google the names of each hosta and you can identify the posts related to them, read the ones you wish, and learn what happens to each plant in or near your zone. We have a few folks growing hosta in TX, so you should find something helpful about the eventual size of each hosta. Don't read the promo card, but read how big it becomes in your growing zone. What to watch for in your zone. I'm in zone 9a. It is interesting to me that more high zone folks are becoming interested in hosta. That is great! Hosta are on the move, and the direction is south! I always knew the hosta had a game plan for climate change. :)

Moni, everything you do looks good. Which reminds me, it must be time for you to post more pics of your gorgeous grandchildren. Susanjf, thanks for pointing out the pyramid corners. I love mission furniture, but hadn't made the connection. Now I know why I was drawn to the footstool. Jasdip, my furniture improvement efforts have been spotty at best--but I keep trying! Thank you everyone (my head keeps bumping in to the ceiling right now...lol.) BUT, I don't classify myself as an artist at all. When I look at my stuff I see all of my errors and silently cringe hoping no one else does. Slowmedown...I do have a glass saw and a grinder. On this project, I did use the saw to cut out the close tight spots on the leaves as a whole then just used my hand tool to cut them in fours. The small leaves in all the other projects were free hand cut, just willie nillie, and then I used the saw to do the nicks and my hand tool to cut them down the middle. My favorite to cut is the sunflowers...they are so easy and can be done free hand....again, willie nillie! I don't usually use the grinder that much although I know some people grind every piece, and I probably should, but I don't. I have paitence but not that much paitence (or maybe I'm just lazy, not sure whether it's the lack of patience or a whole lotta laziness...lol.) Thank you again and I would be tickled pink to have you for a visit anytime you're gonna be up around OKC. Of course I don't have all of these with me to see anymore but I have some and I'm working on more! I'd LOVE to see that little backyard escape you're working on too...my whole family has been following it and we are just blown away...you've done an excellent job! My daughter calls it a Fairy Land. To me and my husband, it reminds us of our time living in El Paso....very rich in culture and color...we miss it from time to time because of that. Thank you for all of the pics! Addiesue

Oh, ADDIE: I remember you talking about that when you finished your pantry door. Goodness gracious, you've done two major projects to perfection. I love how you've given the pattern (eyes) in the feathers contrast w/the white around the blue. I can't imagine why you aren't happy w/your sky - it's PERFECT. I also like the feeling of the roundness in your columns - they're so real-looking. The whole thing gives me the impression of being outside in some sort of pavillion w/the peacock calmly looking through the pillars - such a peaceful sight. I so admire your patience in cutting all those intricate, small pieces. Another amazingly, unforgettable work of art. I had looked at this last evening, but was too tired to comment. I awoke w/thoughts of it this morn - truly a gallery-worthy piece of art. How lovely your d.r. must be w/this fabulous project. Take a deep bow and accept your crown, girlie. You must be as proud as this peacock looks.

My guess is the birdies will love it!! They seem to like sparkly stuff.

Can I ask, how did you attach the pieces? I'd LOVE to have some of these in my garden.

So pretty-pretty! I have a lot of free roaming kitties in my neighborhood, so bird feeders are a bit dangerous in the yard. I would love to have a few of those hanging around, though- maybe I can find a spot to hang it where they can't get to it.

Did you have to drill the glass? It looks like the top parts are loose with the cord holding them together- did you attach the cord to the plate on the bottom somehow?

I just put a peach pie in to bake and finally have time to sit down and visit the Junkyard.
First of all - Happy Mardi Gras! (I know it's tomorrow-Tues.- but I won't have to get back here in the morning)

kathi mdgd- the green you see are my early daffodils, there are some crocus there too but they don't show in the photo.

Drill the glass? Yes I drilled it.
I recently invested in a diamond glass/tile drill bit. It was $2 more than the carbide one I'd been buying. It is a lot faster and I really like the hole it cuts. I think I'll use diamond bits from now on, talk about a time saver!

The top is a glass cabinet pull/knob but because the hole in to top of the lamp piece is a lot larger than the hole in the knob, I glued the knob to the lamp part. Gluing really helped stabilize the whole thing.

I was thinking ahead with this time and took photos before I filled the feeder! Check out the photos and if you have any questions, please post them.

That is one high class looking bird feeder! I absolutely love it! That was very creative, using the divided dish at the bottom leaves room for the seeds to spill into it, and the glass drawer pull on top was the perfect addition. You've made the prettiest bird feeder ever! ;o) Luvs

This is neat! I headed straight to the ts to check for things to make this with. I'll have to wait to come up with a clear lamp as they only had china ones. I suppose the china would work, but I'd like to make one in clear glass with cobalt pieces. This looks like something the squirrels wouldn't be able to destroy by chewing on it!!!

Thanks for all the kind words. This morning there were goldfinches all over this feeder. I think they like the "littleness" of it.
I'm not going to be able to post very much for awhile, we have a major computer problem. My DD is graciously letting me use her Mac tonight. She's a sweetie!
