Comments (2)If I use seed it usually takes 2 years to grow. I think your plan will work as long as you keep them weeded. You might inter plant lettuces and other things with them. They will be hard neck which means they will grow a skape, a curved stalk where your seed came from. Pick that while it is still curled, very tasty. Letting it grow on the garlic means smaller garlic cloves. It is faster to plant the cloves of the best plant for your crops in the future....See MoreGrowing Natal plum from seeds indoors
Comments (1)I have never seen a Natal Plum growing as a tree, and the tallest one I have ever seen was my Grandfather's, which was about head-high when it was 20 years old, growing in the desert with lots of heat! Most are about hip-high after a few years, growing in zone 9. I don't know if you could grow one very well in zone 5, and I doubt you would get fruit. You do know they have leaves and need sun all year long, yes? And they do not do well with cold at all. Even I have difficulty growing mine in Sacramento, because they keep getting nipped/killed by frost when our weather reports are wrong, and I don't get them covered. I have replaced 3 plants that died this way (well, 2 and one that looks REALLY bad right now :( we'll see if it grows again when it gets warmer) But if you still want to try, I would love to know where you get seeds, because Natal Plums are one of my favorite fruit, and it's getting harder all the time to find anything other than the ornamental "Boxwood" variety. Comments (6)The plums from seed will not be true to the form of the parent. I don't know how close it will be having never grown plums from seed. In general most fruits do not come true from seed since the seed will be a cross of the parent and the pollinating plant. If you want an identical tree you need to take some wood of the original tree and graft it to a rootstock. If you wanted to avoid buying anything you could grow out a few of the seeds and then in a few years graft the original tree to your seedling trees. Comments (7)I brought in a batch of 300 moso seeds last year. I have detailed my expermentation with germination on my website trying various recommended techniques, including a table with the variables. You may find it a good read. Check previous entries to read the entire experiment. http://www.hardyoutdoorexotics.com/?cat=11 To make things easier for you, I germinated them directly in soil. I had a 75% germination rate by soaking the seeds in a 10% saltwater solution for 10 minutes, and rinsing off with water before sowing. 67% germination rate with a batch that had an overnight soak in a 20-20-20 solution. And 67% germination rate with a batch that had a soak in a 10-52-10 solution. Those two 67% germination rates were ranked in the top 3 for breaking through the soil the quickest at 21 days. A water soak also broke through at 21 days but only netted me a 58% germination rate. For those that recommend a brief refridgeration for these seeds, germination was delayed, and the success wasn't that great.
